Went to a garage for some simple cosmetic repairs and went home with a dead airbag computer :( What happened is my battery malfunctioned (not depleted, just some cell went faulty). The guys at the garage thought it just died and tried to wake the car with cables. The result is: they seem to fried my airbag control unit, which costs about 600 EUR from the official dealership.

Unfortunately it's not just an error; we cleared all the errors, but the base problem stays.

I am obviously going to negotiate with the garage for some reimbursement and will try to find a second hand unit on eBay.

But if anyone had similar issue and could provide any input, I'd appreciate it :)

Happened to me 3 weeks ago. Driving along then "Airbag Failure" warning and red light on dash. Took it to the dealership there was a low power warning recorded and the airbag control unit was unresponsive. £600 to fix and the car was just a month out of warranty.

Anyway, after speaking with Fiat they are picking up 90% of the costs, I am just annoyed it took so long to get fixed as I kind of like the idea of my airbags actually working if required!

100% the garage killed your airbag ECU jumpstarting the car, if you read the manual it states never to jumpstart the car as it can damage a control unit, a faulty cell wouldn't kill and ECU

make a difference between jump and bump start
 
manual aside, the bravos battery just isnt one to be jump-started (using cables). It dies all of a sudden with no previous warning, and they simply refuse to be jump started. I tried jump starting it with a honda civic, an e-class, and a damn truck and still it never came back to life.

As with bump starting (pushing the car), the manual clearly says not do so to prevent fuel from entering the catalytic converter. not that anyone even does that anymore.
 
My airbag ECU died on my a month ago a few days after my car had had its cambelt replaced by the garage. It cost me 1200 AUS to repair including parts and labour!!

They had no idea what caused it and ive had no issues with the battery that I know of (wifes car)....

At least im not the only one its happend too and in reality its the first thing that has gone wrong with the Car in 4 yrs of ownership
 
Problem fixed by taking the car to an ECU garage. Airbag ECU disassembled and reprogrammed - turned out it was not fried, just the information got messy. All fixed now, total cost about 60 EUR. The garage that caused it refused to cover the costs though.
 
definitely better than 600 euros (Y). just don't jump start your car again

It's got nothing to do with the car, more the fact your battery had had it. A jump starts is for jumping a low battery, not a completely flat battery (y)
 
now adays its gonna get to a point jump Starting a car is gonna be a big No-No

it might just be better off - disconnecting the negative terminal and charging the battery in the car for a few hours on a high amp rate then slow as its nears full

That way you have a full battery - and most "intelligent" chargers will tell you if there is a fault while charging

Not very handy at the road side though.

Tbh issues with jumping are normally caused by people using the wrong kit, or the right kit incorrectly.

i get what you mean but the battery died all of a sudden with 0 warning after a long ride. its probably a sort of battery that only dies when it really has nothing left in it . a fiat mechanic also told me that this car needs a big charge to start up and that you have almost no chance of jump starting any bravo.
