Hi all, I'm new to the forum and am after a bit of advice please.

I have a 2008 Bravo, 1.6 diesel multijet. On quite a few occasions when filling with fuel, the gauge will never read completely full. Even if I let the fuel pump click off several times the needle still only gets up to appx 7/ 8th's or so of what it should do. This is not every time but happens more than it should- certainly the last two fills at least.
I'm assuming that I must still be getting a 'full' tank of fuel in but the gauge is incorrect. Therefore I am refilling probably 50-80 miles or so sooner than I really need to but don't want to test this theory!

Any ideas would be appreciated
Many Thanks in advance

Firstly welcome :D

I have 2 thoughts:

a) could it be that the diesel is foaming and it needs to be left a bit longer to settle before finishing the top up ?

b) it can help to find a spot at the filling station that slopes down on the opposite side to the filler ;) (it's not so daft as it sounds)

Enjoy your Bravo :D

Welcome to the forum.

Priming the fuel pump will take away fuel from the tank, and since the level sensor is in the tank, priming it once or more times will not make any difference.

Did you get the car new, or SH, is this a new problem?
Do you use the same service station and the same pump when you fill it up?

I suggest that at your next fill up, you let it fill up on auto, and then very carefully add some more by hand... and see if you get it to go up to 8/8. If you get the 8/8 on the gauge then the electrical side of things is OK.

If you still do not get the 8/8 then it can be an electrical issue, like a bit of coronation on a connector that is acting like a resistor in the circuit. Or if the car has been doing this ever since it was new, or had a new pump fitted then it might be that the float arm is bent and the sensor can't reach the 'full' level.

Let us know how you get along on this, others might have a similar issue.

Hope this helps,
Dan

If I fill up before it gets empty (just above E), I can't get it "full".
Otherwise, it does. And I'm talking several litres of difference!

Filled up today, paying extra attention as I had this issue before... The diesel did seem to foam quite a bit, and I was able to add quite a bit more after waiting only a few seconds (fill up till the click, wait a few seconds, squeeze again untill click)... Hope it helps

I always put quite a bit more petrol in my T-jet after it clicks, if you squeeze it only half way it will never click. It's generally not a good idea to put too much more in though.

My car is a 2008 1,6 MJet too, and it does exactly the same thing. It hasn't bothered me much though, I'm just adding it to the rather long list of quirks (mostly software related stuff) that I just relate to the car being an Italian budget offering.

Hi again,

Thanks for the welcome and the quick replies.
It's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing the random functions of the Fiat range!
I guess I will also add it to the list of other issues that I've had and still do as well.

I'm aware of the foaming issue and am pretty sure it isn't that. I tend to use either a Shell or Murco station near me, and vary the pumps that I use.

I literally just filled up before posting so may try some of your suggestions next time around.

Thanks again for the advice.

Just brimmed my tank (fuel almost over flowing) and this is the most my gauge ever shows :(

Hi

I had the same issue and I thought that it is the cars fault, but it is the foaming of the diesel at certain gasoline pumps. I know at which pumps I get the same problem as everyone else is describing here. I guess it is a bit too tight when the gasoline or diesel is beeing pumped into the tank and the air is escaping too slow.If I wait ten or 20 minutes I can put in a bit more gas, as some fuel pumps use too much preassure for pumping in the fuel, so they can serve more customers at peak time.
