Hi I have noticed a knocking ( tapping ) noise cumming from my engine (1.9 16v ) under load . This happens from a cold start and then only sometimes once warm which I feel is strange . Any one had a similar problem or can shed any light on the issue ? Cheers

Mine does excatly the same and has done for 2 years. Many people on here have the same noise. What it is I dont no, but suspect either piston slap when cold or just nosiey tappets until they fill with oil.

So is this a common fault ? I'm going to go for a drive tomorrow and see for sure if the noise goes once warm ? I just don't want any engine damage and am concerned about the noise being a warning to other damage

Mine makes the same noise ('08 1.9 16v 150 Sport) and has done since i bought it at 22K. Now on 37K and no faults, just the same tapping noise. Sounds like a tappety noise, worse when cold, but still there when warm (not always audible). Only occurs under load really, (which makes the tappets seem unlikely). Might just be a characteristic of the engine?

what engine oil have you guys got in your cars ?
i been using 0w30/5w30 instead of the fiat recommended 5w40 and dont really seem to notice this and mines a 57 08 model now on 73k could possibly be due to the fact that the oil is thicker and obviously due to the cold over night it thickens up slightly taking longer to circulate around the engine where as the 0w30 doesnt.

That's a reasonable explanation, although you'd think Fiat would have got the right spec. oil for it by now (they've been making this engine long enough!) to stop it from tapping, if indeed that's what it is..

Mines the Selina 5w40 (i presume, as Fiat serviced it last, before i bought it.) It is due a service soon, and i'm sure that doesn't help, but it has been doing it since i had it, 7 months and 15,000 miles ago.

It is a bit hit and miss though, this morning when cold it was tapping, then as soon as it was up-to-temp, it was fine. The other day however, it continued tapping all day (quieter when warm). Very odd.

Went for a drive today and here is exactly wit happend . Cold start tapping noise under load . Pulled up at garage 10 mins later for some diesel started up and no noise ? Drove another 5 minutes and lovely no noise just the normal diesel engine noise and then the minute later put the foot down in 3rd and back comes the tapping ? Really annoying now and I don't want a broken engine as I love this car. Don't know if this help but my dad has a brand new Saab 93 which has the fiat 1.9 16v engine in it but with twin turbo and 160 bhp and his engine sounds normal with no tapping noise ? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi had mine checked year or so ago, because i was concerned,it is something to do with a flap/valve in the inlet manifold and is normal. The dealer i have used for 12 years and are a family business(very small) J G BURGESS in sittingbourne kent, and would recommend, but get it checked if your worried as its hard to hear noise on a text:)

so are you saying that this noise is completely normal ?

Hi again,im saying the noise in my car is normal! I can only hear it sometimes when the radio is off,and sounds like a very light tappet noise,i can`t induce it,and as i said it was a couple of years ago when had it checked, and the noise has been there since new (3yrs) I can`t remember exactly what i was told but i think it was to do with the design of the inlet manifold and exhaust gas recirculation.get yours checked as it will only give you sleepless nights, better to be safe than sorry and if it`s a good dealer they will know straight away and wont charge!!GOOD LUCK.

If it is knocking between the 3rd and 4th cylinder on the intake side with twice the speed of the first cylinder - gotta listen like me with a screwdriver between your ear and the casing - the camshafts are out of phase relative to each other.

They can be adjusted with the oil filler and vacuum pump off. Technically, one would check that during cambelt change.
