just thought i'd see if anybody else was suffering with really stiff gear change a few days ago when it was really cold

I was so bad it was hard to tell what gear you were going in - no feel at all

which resulted in a few badly chosen gears - got a lot better now it has warmed up a bit but this cant be normal

mines been fine really.. its a little bit stiff for maybe the first gear select but after that its fine its more then likely just me thats cold and stiff...

if its that stiff i would get the garage to look at it though.. it could only be transmission fluid that would be the problem at a guess.. been low.

i have more problems with starting my engine on a cold morning.. takes a few turns more then i would like to start sometimes.. but after the first initial turn over its fine...

is yours a diesel?

First gear and reverse were a little difficult to engage... its normal.. i had the same issue.

If your still concerned take it to the dealer and they will have a look and possibly adjust your gear cables/check gearbox oil/bleed system.

As it gets a little older it will bed in and select fine.. as mine does now.

I had this - gearbox was really stiff when first switched on on a very cold day? Took a few minutes to 'loosen' up and then it started changing ok?

Fine for rest of day?

You have some sort of corrosion in the gearbox and cables and they are seizing - mine did this and it was a warranty fix - garage had to order the part but was fixed next day.

2007 Sport TJet

No problems since it was fixed (but not really had a real cold spell since either!)

My MJ150 Sport's gearchange is fairly bad and seems to be getting worse. Luckily I store my car in a garage so its not as bad as it could be if the car was left out in the cold.

Reverse is very difficult to engage (sometimes almost impossible) so I tend to leave it in gear when I park up. First gear can be tricky to engage and when changing from first into second, there's a definite 'cruch' or 'grabbing' of the gear. It does seem to be spreading to third gear also.

The car is 13 months old and has done 12000 miles. The gearbox fluid has been changed and that made no difference. My partner has the exact same car yet the gearchange seems more fluid and nicer to use and also the clutch is much lighter.

I'll get it booked in before the weather starts to get any colder.

Mikey, sounds like a clutch problem to me, not disengaging fully. When you struggle to get first or reverse, have you tried pumping the clutch pedal?

EDIT " Sneak out tonight with a screwdriver, and swap number plates:D:devil::devil::devil:

eased off when the temp picked up the last few days but last night when it was down to 2'C it was incredibly stiff, 1 to 2 to 1 ouch - when take out of gear when stationary it will stay between whatever gear you took it out of (say between 1st and 2nd or 5th and 6th) not drop back to the neutral position between 3rd and 4th. think I'll have to get it in to the sealers this week - if only to get a lower visc gear oil

PS 150 sport Diesel - 2008 - 30K miles ish

I'll put a quid on it that your gearbox has water corrosion in it and that is what is causing it to go stiff...stick it in the garage and let the warranty repair it...

I had major problems with my gearbox last year. I was told by the dealership that it was normal for the bravo to be stiff when cold...even by one of the service staff after I had had it in to be looked at. However my gear changes would be notchy even when the car was fully warmed up.

I perceviered...and the next time I went in, the car was taken out with me as a passenger and the Tech guy agreed that something wasnt right.

I ended up with a new gearbox.

So if you think something isnt right...go get it sorted under warranty! :)

It helps a little but nothing to write home about. I think I'll be booking it in soon.

I had a problem a while ago, that every time I changed into 3rd gear, no matter how fast or slowly, it made a crunchy tick noise as it settled... doesn't do it anymore though. I'm guessing it was just her time of the month, eh?

Latest update ... car in today for investigation. Good service and diagnosis from Pewsham Garage.

Illuminatation behind heater temperature control knob - fixed.

Windscreen washers - fixed.

Indicator stalk (won't stay on in cold weather when indicating left) - replacement ordered.

Poor gearchange and difficulty in selecting reverse - new clutch ordered.

Car's going back in next week when the parts have arrived.

the mjet 150 is known for this difficult gear engagement.

Theres a service news from fiat about it and a new clutch kit is the only answer (y).. after they have tried to bleed the system.

I will get mine done before the summer as i still have difficulty engaging reverse when its cold.

I'm hoping to be reunited with my car tomorrow. The technicians couldn't get the gearbox out but eventually managed to. They revealed an issue with the clutch and also ordered a new release mechanism (?) for it. Similar story with the indicator stalk. After discovering there are multiple types, they had to order a replacement steering wheel and airbag as some components broke when trying to remove the stalk.

Thank heavens for warranties. As long as it is returned with the original issues resolved and no new ones, I'll be happy.

Great news mikey.

Its a service news bulletin fiat have issued... affects the 150 mjets... symptoms are difficulty engaging 1st or reverse gear.

Solution 1. bleed the hydraulic system

if still no go..

solution 2. replace clutch kit... something im getting done in the new year.. all free of charge(y)

Something to do with the pressure plate springs disorting????

I'm looking forward to being reunited...and I hope it makes the clutch pedal and gearbox lighter :)

We've been reunited and all seems much better with the clutch and gearchange.

There is however, the issue of a regular metallic clunk/ping noise coming from the pedals/drivers footwell, the fact that the ESR and hill hold decided to disabled itself on the way back from the garage, the cruise control now not working and the damage to the steering wheel.

I guess I'll be making a return trip in the new year...
