As stated elsewhere on the Forum, I've just come back from a week in Italy and what may be interesting to diesel fans was an article in Quattroroute magazine for July. Tucked away at the bottom of page 132 was a small article about future versions of the 1.9 Multijet. It seems FIAT are aiming for the Holy Grail of 100hp per litre. The engine will have what they are referring to as TST, or Twin Stage Turbo. This motor appears to have two turbos, a small one for the bottom end and a big'un for higher revs. It would appear to be planned in two similar versions; one giving 180hp and the other 190, both at 4,000 revs and identical torque output of 300 Nm at 1250 rpm and 400 Nm at 2000 rpm. For comparison the 2.0litre BMW 118d puts out 143hp and 300Nm of torque and the VW Golf 2.0 GTD gives 170hp and 350 Nm of torque. If everybody except me knew all this rubbish before I posted it, sorry for wasting your time.

The actual BHP is reported to be 177 and 188.

The 177 will be available to other car manufacturers where as the 188bhp will only be available to the Fiat group (Fiat/Alfa/Lancia).

The twin turbo is actually one physical turbo but with 2 rotors. Not like the cheating method of 2 actual turbos. :D

I for one will be very interested to see how this pans out.

It would be great to see how this engine performs after a remapping.

Our Stilo MJ 150 16v, after a remap, puts out 205 bhp and 418 Nm torque, and
is pretty wild.

If they put the new engine in the Bravo, it will definately be my next car.(y)

BMW 2.0d can now kick out 204 bhp so Fiat will be playing catch up I guess. The Holy Grail as it were has already been reached.

Angel Tuning have had 2.4 JTDs to 250bhp.

Interesting photos. Obviously twin turbo but different to the usual one turbo feeding a few cylinders and the other turbo feeding the rest.

Also notice the car is fitted with a borg warner to alert you of the presence of a collective-minded creature of part bionic build.

Remaps and mods aside, its a lofty goal in a diesel. Its been reached before, but I hope its reached time and time again now.

BMWs 535 is the next step in diesel technology IMO, I'd love to see whats next on the cars, the limits of that engine are pretty much untouched yet.

Only availible as an auto IIRC as there is just too much power for any (including M5) gearbox or clutch BMW do.

What is stock though? The alfa could have been sold with the 250bhp if Alfa had seen fit.

Well I can go to a BMW dealership and buy a 2.0d BMW with 204 bhp, no remap, no modifications, not special order. That's "stock" to me, not what "could have happened if Alfa had wanted to". This is besides the point, the Grail that Fiat is hoping for has already been met by a mainstream manufacturer.

The Alfa obviously couldn't have been sold to be reliable or economical with 250 bhp otherwise it probably would have been done.

So what? It's a diesel engine, they consist of the same items and ignoring capacity, pretty much all manufacturers have the same types of engine, regardless of brand.

If you go back to the original post I made, Fiat are catching up with a 188 bhp 1.9 (especially since VAG/Renault/BMW have had 170-175 bhp 2.0 litres for a while, with Fiat stuck at 150 bhp 1.9). Fiat should be aiming higher, not aiming for a Grail reached whilst they were still thinking up their engine, of 100 bhp/litre but 105 or 110....with reliability and economy.

Fiat are not trying to be BMW though? I don't see your point.

Fiat have achieved 100bhp/litre at a fraction of the cost that BMW have spent on components. I think that's something to celebrate. Belittling their achievement isn't big or clever.

Totally agree. I for one would be intrested in buying the Fiat version as it will be affordable :slayer:. Unlike BMW's hyped up overpriced sofa on wheels.

What you are describing is, I think Turbo-compounding as developed by Scania for its heavy truck range. To quote the article: "...sta nei due turbo: uno piccolo, per i bassi regime" ( ...it has two turbos: one small, for the bottom range) e uno pui grande, per gli alti." ( and one very large for the high end). I think what is important for FIAT is that this is a completely new induction system for them. Remapping an existing engine is a completely different kettle of fish because if 100bhp was the start of 2 valve 1.9 development which has ended at 120 then 180-190 could well be the start of new development which could easily go much higher. If we remember that the 1.3 MJT started at 70bhp and within about 3 years has reached 105, that,s a 50% increase without any new technology then how about a 275bhp 1.9 MJT?
