grinding gears help!

Dear Forum,

I've recently bought from auction a Diesel Bravo on a R plate. The car seems fine except for a loud grinding sound whenever the care is in first or second gear, can anyone advise on what it may be and how i can fix it?

Any advise would be greatfully welcome.
