what if he had a renault 5 turbo...they are 1,4's and they are fast!! would probably break down before he sets off though

Very fast, but only fast because of power to weight. they weigh around 850kg
meaning a power to weight of 140bhp per ton as they are 120bhp. The engine is the 1394cc first fitted in the Renault R8 Gordini and was then fitted in the renault 5 Gordini before being turbo'd and fitted in the renault 5 and renault 11

A 5GTX is quite nippy, has the 1.7 carb engine pushing out 90bhp

A 5GT has a 0-60 of low 7's.
because a mk2 HGT is 155bhp above 60mph the 5 would really struggle.
also the 5 is renowned for HG failure and cooling issues. It is a pushrod engine so is a very very old in design.

Re: Funny things people have said about your brava/o

I get very polarised comments on the Bravo, (much like most of the Fiats I've owned now and in the past). The negative comments are usually generalistic snobbery, based on very old news about Fiats being unreliable, and rust prone. Of course, these snobs seem to forget that most 70's and early 80's cars, from Ford to Vauxhall to Renault to Alfa, all suffered terrible reliability problems, and severe corrosion issues.

I've had: "Ugly looking thing in'it?", "Looks like it's frowning from the back","Has it started rusting yet?", "How many times has it broken down on you".

I've also had: "Oooh, we're driving in style today - very posh!" (from a mum of a friend I was giving a lift to, she was NOT being sarcastic, and genuinely loved the car). "Comfortable isn't it?", "It's lovely and quiet inside, even above 60".

I've also had people comment on the interior smell. I think because mine is relatively low mileage, and kept immaculate inside, the original "new car" smell is still there in the Bravo. Not sure what Fiat used as sealant, or maybe it's the plastics, but the Bravo does have a sweet fragrance about it. (No air-fresheners used, either).

To be honest I don't really care what people say about the Bravo. As my 2nd car, and "work-horse". It's only ever let me down once, during the time I've owned it. And that was the standard clutch cylinder leaking and failure issue, which I class as a minor issue. It starts first time every time, is comfortable, sips petrol, (as it's a 1.2), and I think from some angles looks stylish. (Those rear arch flanks look subtle-aggressive on th rear side mirrors).

Thankfully, peoples snobbery means you get a good one now for less than a grand. That'll be low mileage, full history, immaculate inside and out. And as long as it's maintained well, should see you well every day.
