Hi everybody its me again:bang: Does anyone have any idea of exactly how much i would need to change in order to swap my rear brake drums for discs, would it just be the wheel assembly or would i need to replace the hubs and bearings as well and modify the suspension?

What you go at the moment? (as in 1.2/1.6/1.4) I think its only the JTD and the HGT that have rear discs, but i could be wrong as i would have thought the 1.8 sould have had them too.

I'm not sure on the process of swapping them about, i know plenty have, so someone will give you the answers.

Surprisingly no ones done a guide as yet.
 
i've converted a few cars to rear discs. its never hard. the easiest way to do it to remove the whole lot from the donor car and leave it assembled ready to fit onto your car. then all you have to worry about is changing over the rear sections of the handbrake cable and connecting your copper brake lines onto the new flexihose's, everything else will be a direct fit and bolts into place.

when i say "the whole lot" i mean remove the whole rear suspension assembly as one piece. thats includes both trailing arms, the antiroll bar, springs and shocks, and the complete breaks all fitted to the torsion bar. it only takes a few bolts to remove this as a whole, which is easier than taking things apart.

all you have to do is this:
1. remove rear exhaust, fuel tank and rear wheels
2. disconnect copper brake pipes (both at centre of torsion bar, before bias valve)
3. slacken handbrake cable at lever, then remove exhaust heatshield to access handbrake cable connection and disconnect both rear cables
4. disconnect the abs sensor connectors (one on each side)
5. remove the bolts holding the rear suspension assembley to the car body

thats it, then you have the whole lot ready to fit to your car, minimal fuss and very easy. fitting to your car will take 1-2 hours with the car sat on axle stands.

if your model does not have abs then you can simply secure the abs sensor wiring and not use it.

Easiest and cheapest possible way is to buy complete wishbones off scrapers. But... don't expect miracles. Rear brakes are not really responsible for braking effectiveness. 90% of braking force comes from the front.

Anyway - this has been done - I'll try to find posts on that at Polish forum.

Wow jug thats an expensive method never mind complicated. I've done a rear disc conversion on my Bravo JTD.

All you need is Calliper Mounts, Callipers, Calliper Brackets, Disc Guards, new hand brake cables L+R, new brake lines, Hub Washer off a HGT, New Discs & Pads and thats it. Jobs done.
 
I have a 1.6 Hlx, i wasnt really expecting to have better braking as my brakes are excellent for now, its just like someone else said, its for the looks I've got fairly open spaced alloys on the bravo and the drums look wrong i tried painting the drums the same colour as the car but i didnt like it very much and would like to fit the discs just for the sake of fitting them tbh
 
By the way thanks for all the useful hints and tips so far, my local scrappy has a few jtd's in his yard so its interesting to know that its not only the hgt that had discs all round

The 'hub washer'. Where does this fit into the scheme of things? Do you need to remove the hub to fit the parts behind it? Disc Guard/Calliper Mounts?

expensive? its only £40-50 if you remove it yourself and you get a suspension upgrade as well as breaks. plus its easy, literally only a few bolts to remove and fit.

how do you remove your inner drum if you only take the disc breaks? and what do you mount the caliper bracket to? and where do you put a wheel bearing? what does the wheel even bolt on to? you wouldnt have any hubs :confused:

Not everyone can afford the time and effort trying to rip the whole underneath of the wheel assembly off, expecially if the car is situated low to the ground aswell as wrestling with rusty bolts etc. Also there is no suspension upgrade, they are the same. There was an optional extra to have the sport pack suspension on the HGT but only a small few opted for it.

1. Undo hub nut and remove drum and hub assembly.
2. The calliper mounting locations are there on all Bravos regardless of being a HGT or not. You will see them with the drum removed. Just fit the calliper mounting points/brackets.
3. The wheel bearing is part of the Hub, you refit your existing hub.
4. The old existing hub.
5. Er, yes i would they are already on the car.

Like i mentioned Jug i've already done this, no more parts are required.

The Bravo's with drums, have a 10mm hub washer/spacer say, to accomodate the hub to match the size of the drum. With discs they are much narrow than a drum therefore the Hub needs to be brought in abit, therefore you need the 5mm hub washer/spacer to accomodate the hub with the discs.

And yes its the only thing to fit behind the Hub amongst the disc guard.
 
The part marked "Kit Bearing" differs in part number between the HGT 71714476 and all the others 71714477. Any idea what the difference is?
