how come? I guess there is a fule filter them even if it isnt replacable. Is it self cleaning, built into the fule pump, seems a bit crazy to have a filter that isnt changable, as kind of defetes the purpose as with an filter i guess they get clogged during the life of the car.

Its fitted into the fuel tank, which isn't part of the servicing. You cannot even buy the fuel filter. Ask Fiat.

No probs, was just wondering where it was, as was sure it had one somewhere even if it wasnt replacable, i dont suppose my local dealer would know what the idea is behind a non servicable fule filter, but when i'm in tomorrow for my 'free winter check and goodie bag' i'll ask anyhow.

to clean it you can wire the pump up backwards to backflush the filter, but i only suggest you do that if you know there is a blockage that needs removing, and after doing it you need to fully drain the tank to remove any crap. many cars have fuel filters that do not need replacing, remember that modern fuels are very clean, and the chances of crap getting in the fuel tank is very very small to start off with. even after 100,000 miles if you change a filter and break it open you'll see it never has anywhere near enough dirt to affect fuel flow. once upon a time it was more important, these days lifelong filters are a more realistic idea.

I had a 20v coupe and that had the fuel filter on the passenger side up near the back wheel. It had a plastice cover over it when this was removed you could see the cannister it had push fit connectors. I can't see them fitting a filter to the coupe and not the HGT with the same engine?

just checked my manual and you're right. the 2.0 did have a fuel filter, and when i checked other models it says they do too.

so now i'm confused, i've always thought the 1.6 was the only model with a removable fuel filter? i've tried to change it on other models and it wasnt there.

please check under the driver's side platic side skirt trim to see if a fuel filter is there. i'd be very interested to know if it is.

but i think i now know why. it seems the fuel filter is actually hidden under a cover under the car. in the following attachment you can see the cover you need to remove in the second pic. i've always looked under the driver's side plastic trim in front of the rear wheel, because thats where haynes said it is and thats where it was on my 1.6.

i'll try changing mine soon to see if its there, or under the cover shown in the pic below, or nowhere at all.

but that still doesnt explain why a fuel filter isnt listed at motorfactors for any model other than a 1.6? i assume the 1.6 filter will fit all models.

the recommended 40000km service intervals for a fuel filter are highly unneccessary imo

Hey Jug;

I own the same model as you, and have changed the fuel filter, it is kinda hidden though :p, and I got mine from partco/unipart group, they didn't question when I asked for one either.

Craig :)

Jug your talking MK1's here not MK2's. I'm guessing you have the MK1 handbook. The 155HGT (MK2) does not have a fuel filter under the plastic panel infront of the drivers side rear wheel.

whoops you're right :eek: i only checked my mk1 manual. the mk2 HGT does have a built in filter, as shown in the attachment.

also according to the mk2 manual, the 1.2 is the same with a built in filter. the JTD has a filter fixed onto the side of the inlet manifold. the mk2 manual does not cover the 1.6 or 1.8 petrol models (why!!?) so i cant be sure about them but i guess since the HGT went from external to built in filter, that other models will be the same.
