Hi,

I'm new on this forum and wonder if you can help with a problem on my Fiat Brava 1.4 SX 1998.

It looks like it needs a new starter motor as it is not turning over or engaging when I try to start, but just makes an electrical noise.

Where is the starter motor located on the Fiat Brava ?

How easy is it to replace ?

Thanks,

Dan

if the noise its making is like a ticking noice (very fast) it could not be the starter motor.

We've got a crappy battry in our Hyundai Atoz and each time it falls flat, it makes a fast ticking noise. First time it did it, i thought it was the starter motor playing up. But later on we found out it was the battery.

So, try maybe checking for any loose connections to the battery maybe. Or maybe the battery is flat.

PS: i'm assuming that the electrical noise you're hearing is the same as the one i heard. Anyway Jug should be around soon with an essay of possible problems you can troubleshoot :p

Thanks for the advice, but I don't think it's the battery as sometimes the car would start after trying a few times.

I'm 90% sure the starter motor is at fault as you can hear it spinning, but not engaging..so probably a faulty solenoid on the starter motor.

As it's not my car I don't want to get involved fixing it unless it is fairly easy to change ?

Cheers,

Dan

to test if it is the solenoid try tapping the starter motor with a hammer, if it then starts you know thats the problem.

replacing the starter motor is surprisingly easy. getting one at a scrapyard will cost you £20-30, possibly less if you shop about and remove it yourself.

i cant find a good pic to show where it is, so use a haynes (y)
