Hi everyine. I've just bought a bravo 1.6 sx. I is a bit of a boy racer type. Now i've had problems with it since i bought it, but got some money back from the dealer to get it fixed, but the problem is persisting. it starts fine everytime when it's cold. but if i drive it round town, and say park up to go in a shop, it will not start again until its cool. i've change the battery and the starter motor but it's still doing it. then my friend noticed water coming out of the exhaust and thought it was the head gasket, i've taken it to a few mechanics and have had different reasons for the trouble. now there is not a lot of water coming out of the exaust no more than normal to me, and the temperature guadge stays at half way, someone suggested the bottom end had gone, and someone else has said its the DCI or DTI which i've tried to find out about to see if the guy is just making stuff up. Can anyong help or do you think it sound like more trouble than it's worth, because i'm at the end of my tether. I really like the car it looks great but that means nothing when it's not working properly.

Thanks,
Kat

My main thought is an earth fault probably the one direct off the battery. However you say they have checked these.

Therefore have they tried the crankshaft sensor? It might just want a clean. :)

Kat im having the same probs with a 1.4 sx fine when cold but refuses to start when hot, have you noticed any lack of performance when the car is hot?
I'm still trying to fix mine, must admit havn't tried the crank sensor, will give it a go and report back, keep me informed in the mean time if you sort it
Cheers

Hey Kat

Don't want to be the alarmist for you but from a previous encounter with my 1.2 mk1 Punto, it does sound like you have Head Gasket problems on the way.The water from the exhaust could indicate that you have a water in the oil problem, meaning that somehow water is leaking into your block somehow.
In which case you can either do a few simple checks to see if it is the head, or if you can't be arsed then it may be time to think about...

a. Shelling out more cash to rectify it.

b.An engine rebuild unless you are DIY mechanic.

C. Buy a second hand/ recon engine and swap with existing one.

Hope hat helps a bit

head gaskets can indeed cause this. However condensation and water in the exhaust are pretty normal, it just depends how much. as posted I would get a compression check done to be sure.

90% of the time its the lambda sensor. it always is in this situation.
the other 10% of the time its due to bad wiring between the battery and starter motor or earth strap, usually the earth strap.

if your headgasket had gone you've have run out of coolant and overheated by now, so dont even worry about it. water coming form the exhaust is normal, combustion creates water.

Hi Dave (charlie2005) yeah the performance is not very good, it hate's traffic and has little pull in second gear. I'm now taking it to a fiat specialist, who thinks it's the crankshaft sensor, but we now think that there might be a fan problem, in that it's not kicking in. I will let you all know the outcome. Thanks so much to everyone for you input, i will give all of your suggestions to the fiat bloke.

Cheers,

Hi Kat ,my fan kicks in when the temp gauge reaches around half way but it doesn't seem to stay on for long,(like short bursts) and the gauge doesn't move much from the half way mark. Its so annoying the problem and you can bet your life it's gonna be something real daft,it's finding it thats the biggest problem, but i'm sure we'll sort it between all of us.
Keep up the good work
Speak soon:D

Coils/Fuel pump!! Guaranteeeeeed LOL

coil pack issues would also cause rough idle and running (only running on 2 cylinders usually).

fuel pump would also cause cold start problems, not just warm. you can test to see if its the fuel pump, leave the ignition on for a few secs before starting, if it then starts fine you know slow fuel rail pressure build up is the problem, caused by a dirty fuel filter or worn fuel pump.

Mine was the FUEL INJECTOR.

Brava 1.4 Hot Starting Problems

Hi, well after a lot of time, effort and money spent on 'Betsie Brava' I've fixed the dreaded Hot-Starting problem. IT WAS THE FUEL INJECTOR.
Following the help and advice I received from members on this site I changed everything there was to change:
Crank position sensor, temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, ECU, ignition coil, fuel pump etc etc.

As a last resort and despite nobody ever having experienced injector problems I decided it was worth paying a last £45 for a replacement injector. The car now starts up every time, hot or cold. I started to think it might be the injector when I took the cover off to look inside, with the engine hot. It was a freezing cold day. Instead of needing an hour or more to cool down the engine fired up. I guessed that the injector was not working when it was hot. When the engine was running the cool air passing over it kept it cool enough to work. When the engine was turned off heat from the engine would rise up the throttle body and the injector would get hot. After being left for just a few minutes the injector was then hot enough to fail. It was then necessary to leave the engine to cool down completely before it would restart. It proved to be difficult tracking down an injector (I live in the Isle of Man) but eventually I found a breaker that did a complete throttle body for £45 delivered.

So, Betsie has been saved from the scrapyard. Many thanks to everyone who offered help. Hopefully my experience will help others who have had the same problems.
