I would just like a comparison really. There doesnt seem to be much about either of these cars around on the net. Reviews are vague and I cant find any decent performance stats.

Anyway,

I know quite a bit about the JTD. I owned a 1.9 JTD Punto. Obviously its sligtly different but its the same engine at the end of the day.

What im really interested in the the 100TD. Are these good engines? What sort of torque are they pulling compared to the JTD? BHP is very similar and one website said that there was only 6/10ths of a second difference in the 0-60 time.

what are the main advantages for the newer JTD unit? is th older TD unit better at anything?

Tuning wise, obviously the JTD can take advantage of a remap. I cant find anything really regarding the TD unit. Can it be remapped?

Any other info about the engines would be superb!

Cheers!

Ok, I know little about the Fiat Diesel units but I think the following is nearly right. maybe...

The 100 Td I think will be a mechanical driven fuel pump and hence not ECU governed. tuning therefore is done by tweeking the diesel pump and also by tweeking the turbo manually by getting it to hold higher boost.

The Jtd engines are direct injection and are Ecu controlled meaning they can be remapped electronically and done more effectively and efficiently.

Stock the jtd will be more efficient. Is the newer generation of diesel and better in every way.

I think this is right I might be wrong though ;)

thats pretty much what i was thinking myself (y)

is the JTD just the newer version of the TD unit? They look similar under the bonnet and the capacity is the same too. is the JTD just an updated version of the original TD with the ECU controlled fueling etc?

This is my understanding yes. That the block is the same. Not sure on differences regarding internals, Pistons, compression ratio etc.

My belief is that the JTD is the new improved newer generation diesel.

Block is the same, head very different.

The JTD is the i.e. as the td is to the carb. Newer technology, built on known hardware.

JTD's are much quieter compared to TDs, they're smoother running, better economy and produce less emissions.

TD's take to bio-diesel and straight/waste veggie oil better than JTDs due to their greater tolerances, especially within the injectors.

The two engines are very similiar power wise (when standard). with the TD100 there is plenty of torque, and will still pull in 5th from idle. There is more noticeable turbo lag in the TD100, which is fun, but can catch you out if you dont rev it a bit e.g. overtaking or pulling out from a junction. The turbo also gives a nice whistle when spooling up. Mine has been 100 % reliable, but the advance solenoid on the injector pump is a known cause of trouble. A healthy engine should give around 45 - 50 MPG, with steady driving. Its a bit noisier than the JTD, but not noticeable inside the car.

The JTD is of course an improvement, its quieter, a bit more refined to drive and gives better economy. MAF sensors are a common problem, but thats about it really.
easy remapping is also an advantage.

regular timing belt / tensioner changes are critical with both engines.

Owen.
