I had some bad luck with my Bravo - a spark plug unscrewed itself.

Doesn't sound too bad does it?
But then the spark plug then started setting off petrol / air explosions all over the top of the engine and blew itself through the ignition coil, which then fell into the cylinder!

Anyway, now i've almost finished fixing it (without a manual cos i couldn't find one for the 2.0 20v) but i've lost the timing marks that i made. Doh!

I think i'll have to buy camshaft locking tools, but does anyone know if i need to buy a crankshaft tool to find TDC?
I'm thinking of doing it by eye....
Cheers,
Ed.

P.s. if anyone has some cam locking tools that they wouldn't mind lending / selling, I'd be very grateful! Already spent way too much on the car - i'm on my second gearbox and clutch...
I live in Warrington, but the car is at my folks house in worcester, so could collect from anywhere between the two.

wow thats an unusual story, never heard of a plug doing that before. poor you :(

getting TDC by eye is easy enough. if there's marks i'd check using them as well.

wont the coupe haynes include the 2.0 20v non-turbo? or is there not even a haynes for the coupe?

okay, in this image it shows the timing mark with the pully off, personally on mine i couldnt get it to line up with anythnig really so had to use the one on the plastic cover.

with the head off you should be able to do it by eye sufficently.

the main problem really is the cams, i did all of mine with out the locking tools and okay it was pretty easy.

what i did was to mark anything and everything that could move and ensure it was in place when it went back on.

the main problem i encountered was that the cams wouldnt balance in place very well because on was right on the point of flicking over and it did multiple times just trying to get the belt on and then more when i tried to tension it.

persistance it probably the key, i had my new head on and belt on and even started the car within the same day!

Cheers for the info everyone, especially bulldog for the pic. I went ahead and bought the cam locking kit in the end, cos all my carefully made timing marks were rubbed off when i took the head to be fixed. I've decided to get the engine out to do the tensioner pulleys as well, cos the car has done 90k and i suspect from what i have been reading that they weren't done when the cambelt was. (it was done using the cheap method) Hopefully should get most of it done this weekend - I'm fed up with driving a crappy 1.6 mondeo!
