I have a T reg Brava 1.6 100 HSX and recently the injector light came on, prior to it coming on it came on intermittantly but not for long and this lasted about a week. it sounds like it is only firing on 3 cylinders and I was thinking that in could be a damaged spark plug or dirty plugs or maybe some dirt in the injectors themselves. i am going to be giving the car a full service soon and for the time being with this problem the car is just sitting not being driven.

a.) will a full DIY service (new plugs, oil, oil filter and air filter) fix this problem

b.)would putting some redex or similar in the petrol sort it out

c.)are my injectors fubar and how much roughly will it cost to fix if the above will not solve it

I love this car and my wife traveled to scotland to get it back from our daughter just for me who had it from us for only 6weeks, of which it spent the time sitting in her drive way doing nothing, and i have suggested that the problem could be down to it not being driven for 6weeks and the car is now sulking with us for abandoning it in scotland.

Many thanks for any help with this matter

Rik

a) Nearly certainly not.

b) There is a chance this will fix it, if not c).

Good luck.

the injector problem on the 1.6 is VERY VERY common, but celebrate because its also very easy and very cheap to repair.

i must have about a million threads on this forum describing in detail how to do it. here's a couple worth reading

so its time to get your multimeter out and check the injectors, then replace any that aren't at least 14ohms with ones from a scrapyard car (test them before you buy them). expect to pay £5 each for injectors.

Been quoted £25 for an injector with a 2 month warranty. is this a good price? if not any suggestions on where is a good place to buy them from for less?

Also another problem is the Airbag light stays on all the time, how can I fix this little problem? is it a case of fitting a new airbag? if so which 1?

And I think I need a new battery in my key, should I be able to buy this easily in Halfords or the like?

Forever having problems at the moment:mad: I think it is the car getting payback for it being deserted up in Bonnie Wee Scotland

£25 fitted is good, but that price for a just second hand injector is beyond a joke. you should go and get yourself one at a scrapyard for £5, that way you can practice the removal procedure to prevent making mistakes when fitting it to your car.

the airbag light is also a common problem on most fiats. a fiat dealer will happily charge you repeatedly for turning it off for a week, but it will come back on no matter what you try. replacing the airbag ecu can fix it for a while, but dont hold your breath. i've removed the LED on the dash to keep the light out forever. it feels good.

open the key and note down the battery code, it'll be CRxxxx where xxxx is a number. then go on ebay and buy a strip of 5 for less than the price of 1 elsewhere.

Thanks again Jug.. you seem to be a mountain of information on Fiat Brava/Bravo.

That was £25 from a scrap/salvage yard with 2months warranty up in the north so not fitted. but posted to me for about a fiver extra.

So I am confused, are my airbags still working or will I have to drive into the nearest wall to test them out?;)

i'm almost certain that every scrapyard close ot you will have a 1.6 bravo, brava or marea. i suggest you reomve it yourself because there are 2 types, 2hole and 4hole. to ake sure you get the right one you need to make sure the inlet manifold on your engine matches the donor engine, either black plastic (mk2) or metal (mk1). also you need to test it's resistance is above 14ohms. if you buy one from a scrapyard already reomved, or even worse posted, there is a good chance you'll get the wrong one or a fualty one, and you'll pay more. i wouldn't do it, i dont have the time or money to waste. if you want your car to work asap, and cheaply, just get to your local scrapyard and find a 1.6 bravo brava marea or stilo with a 1.6 engine that has the same inlet manifold as you.

i've had several conflicting reports about whether the airbag will still work, even from different fiat dealers. the most common answer is that it will still work if the light is constantly on, but if it flashes constantly then the airbag wont work. personally i'm not so sure, and i think a head on collision is the only way to find out.

I know this is probably going to confuse people more but...

I am having the same problem with the airbag light, I phoned one dealership who told me, 'nothing to worry about, if you'd like us to reset the light we can' I then phone another dealership who informed me that 'the airbag light being on is and indication that the airbag mechanism needs resetting' :bang:

I then phone Fiat; I told them that I had been given some conflicting information by two dealerships.

It seems that on the basis of what I've been told Fiat regard the airbag light as a sign that the airbag is disabled and needs urgent attention.

I told them that the airbag light is supposedly a known issue with Bravo/a, he informed me that he wasn't aware of any such issues.

I'm only telling you so that you might be able to make a more informed choice, I don't necessarily agree with what I've been told; but it might not hurt to have it checked out.

its not just bravo/as, its many fiats, and citroens, and fords, and many others. ask 10 dealers and you'll get 10 different answers. they always offer to reset it, and it always comes back on, and they can NEVER fix it permanently. even if you throw hundreds of pounds at them like the previous owner of my girlfrined's mk2 punto sporting did. it still comes back on.

the real reason is because the airbag system is so sensitive to electrical spikes and dips. starting the car wiht your lights on can trigger it. having a flat battery can too. whenever a fuse blows there's a goods chance it'll happen. if you touch any yellow wires on the car its almost certain to come on.

Just got my Haynes manual... and it makes changing the injectors sound like it is really complex, say all about removing the throttle assembly and also of complicated things:confused:

think of haynes as the "complete correct over the top complicated" method. in reality if only need to loosen off the upper inlet manifold enough to slide the fuel rail out. you also need to disconnnect both fuel lines at the back left under the manifold. its a lot easier than it sounds, but isnt everything easy when you know how to do it.

if ur in the south east i will do it for u. i can do the job in under 30mins and ur luck is in as i have 4 spare injectors all working :D

I am in Reading. which is in the South East depending on who you ask, or it is in the South West depending on who you ask, but just to clarify it is just off the M4 at about junction 11. Feel free to email me at [email protected]

Many many thanks

Well...

against all advice I decided to buy some petrol additive to try to clean the injectors and...

I bought Comma Petrol D-Tox from Halfords for £14.99 as it came highly recommended, admittedly by them, but I tought I would give it a go before trying to fix/replace the misbehaving injector. So into the petrol tank it went and off home I drove with a chugging Brava. However before I got home the injector light had gone out:) although the car throttle wasn't as responsive as it once was and it was still chugging a bit at lower revs. I then remembered reading on http://www.bravo-guide.co.uk/fix-a-bravo.htm or BOO about resetting the engine ECU with the red key. So off I went the an adjustble spanner the disconnect the battery. Once this had been done I started my hunt for the all important red key, once found I settled down to read the thread on the keys in this forum and had a chuckle about the poor guy keep getting clones of his red kay thanks to Timpsons after a couple of steak pies although they were missing the steak and 50mins i went out to reconnect the battery, started the car with the red key and let it idle for 5mins (no revs). I then went for a short drive round the block, it still feels a little chuggy on the up take, up to about 2,000rpm, but I put put this down to the spark plugs and running on only 3cylinders for a short while. I am giving it a service next week and I hope that this will sort it out.

Any thoughts please let me know (y)

Thanks one and all:worship:

Car still chugging! and going through one hell of alot of fuel.. Injector light flickering on and off and performance is no better.. So back to plan A and get those damn injectors changed.. might wash it afterwards and hoover out the inside as well.

So AshG if you wanna give me a shout please do as you might be the answer to my players(y)

Comma Petrol D-Tox from Halfords for £14.99!!!!!!!!!!!! dear me thats outrageous. its definately time to change an injector (which would have cost less by the way). it really isn't hard to change an injector on the 1.6, you'll kick yourself once you see how easy it is.

next time a halfrauds employee suggests something to you there should be a little voice in your head asking 2 questions-
1. why am i taking advice from someone who knows less about cars than myself (because even a pure novice knows a lot more than the average halfrauds kid)
2. why am i in halfrauds when it only offers poor products at a high price? (if you actually went to your local motor factors and compared you'd see the big difference)

there's no good answer to either question, which is more than a good enough reason to never go back. even if you live next door to halfrauds and your nearest motorfactor is 10miles away, its still not even worth going in for a look. please please please promise me you'll boycot halfrauds, you deserve better.

Ok ok ok.. i was wrong and I am sorry.. I promise I will never go back there unless it is to buy some car wax? is that ok? and I knew as soon as I bought it I would kick myself about it:bang: My wife often asks if I will ever learn, well I dont think I will

well it helps me sleep at night knowing 1 less person will be going back for more punishment (y)

i guess AshG didn't get back to you about helping you out?

i'm thinking maybe i should have make a video showing how to change an injector when i had a 1.6. it would have been useful so many times.

The last engine I worked on was a V8 3.5 in my old Rover SD1 V8S, engines were simple back then. So I have never played with an engine with injectors so it's all new to me and a bit scarey. But with the helpful advice I have been given here and on BOO it's not so bad, but you know its just doing it and trying it. But god help me if I break it more and it cost more as the wife will kill me and make me leave it to a garage in future, but I have assured her that I can do it.

i agree engines were a lot easier to work on in the old days. i'd still prefer a twin carb. these days its more like fixing a computer than a car. sensors everywhere, ecu controlled everything. its a nightmare unless you have a diagnostics computer. :(
