Hi All, I just have one question:
What I want to know is: If my car is on idle and I turn on the aircon, is the fan supposed to kick in on high speed?

I just would like a simple answer cos I'm already confused.

Also if the car is on idle with the aircon off and the fan is operating on LOW speed, isn't the fan suposed to switch to high speed as soon as I turn on the aircon?

Isn't this the way the fan operates on my 99 MK2 Brava 100SX petrol manual with AIRCON?

Thankyou All :)

Yes it should switch to high speed if the engine is hot. If engine is not hot then it will switch to high speed once engine is hot enough.
If your fan kicks in at high speed about a minute later or so, I think that is fine.

Thanks for replying neoseal,

The thing is that in my case, I'm feeling that the fan is not operating in high speed.
What I do is I turn on the engine and leave it to idle, when the engine is warm enough the fan kicks in at low speed, if I turn on the aircon and rev the car a bit more, the fan stays on low, it doesn't switch to high.
This is what I suspect is causing intermittent overheating.
Is there any other way to test this?
Haynes doesn't say squat about this.
Thanks.

Test the fan speed for low and high, may be the fan switch has fault if u have one. May be ecu is not detecting that aircon and not kicking in the high speed fan. Just brain storming.

its a common problem on mareas (from what i've read), the fan relay contacts are corroded so you've lost high speed. the relay is on the front of the battery tray (or around there) if i remember correctly.

check marea section (y)

Hey Jug,

I already checked there but I couldn't get some accurate info on where it is and how it looks....
I was thinking if anyone with the same car as mine knows anything about it.

Thanxall, I know for sure that I'd be one miserable guy if I wasn't a member of this forum, or I'm sure I would've sold my Brava

In front of the battery.. There is a black cover and under are a whole bunch of relays just waiting to corrode!

Usually the relays themselves are fine - maybe slight greening - but the wire that connects to the relay holder (underneath) comes away from its crimp. Best thing to do is make a record of which wire goes where - cut away the relay holder and use some crimping blade connectors to connect the wires direct to the relay.

Hey Hellcat, thanks for replying.
Do you mean the rectangular black box next to the FUSE box right under the winshield?

I just took a closer look and I found the box Hellcat was talking about. It's right in front of the battery towards the headlights... There are two relay holders, one (to the right when facing the car) has a relay installed and the other (on the left side) has no relay. My car is left hand drive.
So what do you think? is this the way it should be? Is there a relay missing or is it supposed to be for some accessory that my car doesn't have?
Is the one to the right the relay for the fan?
Thankyou all...

Hey guys, can no one help me on this one?
Is that relay sopposed to control the fan between high and low speed?

yep thats the relay, have you tried inspecting the connections on it? give them a clean and a good grease (wd40 wont last, it needs grease to prevent future corrosion)

Thanks Jug, I will do that.
I did an experience yesterday: I tuned on the engine and revved it a little bit.
Then I turned on the AC and after less than a minute the Fan kicked in at low speed. So then I turned the aircon off and the fan also stopped. This happened and the engine was still cold. So I guess so far, this is perfect.

I tried to rev the engine more and more but the temp gauge stayed on the halfway mark and the fan stayed off.
I need to get the engine to warm up enough to get the fan kicking in at low speed and after that I need to turn on the aircon and watch if the fan switches to high speed.

if the A/C turned the fan on, and the fan also turns on when the engine gets hot, it suggests everything is fine. i think the relay is supposed to take both inputs together at the same time as the signal to switch the fan to high speed, so maybe the relay is at fault rather than the wiring (i'd assume either the A/C or a hot engine wouldn't switch the slow speed on by themselves if there was a problem with wiring).

I believe you are right Jug,
I'll try removing the relay and cleaning it a bit along with its holder.
Is there a way I can test the relay before replacing it? I fear it will be expensive to buy it from fiat cos it I noticed that it has the Fiat and Lancia Logo on it

Hellcat can you please tell me exactly what to do?
I'm new to all this stuff :)
Where is the diagram and what should I test with the multimeter?
Thanxalot, I really appreciate your help.
