Well its not due till middle of August but because i have the car tax due in august and the insurance then i thought i would get it in early!

Its booked in at Motormech the nothern camping trip weekend - so will be taking it on 7th and collecting it on the monday.

Its a certain it will fail on the breaks so i am going to get these done before it goes in. Now I have never had a fiat that has passed its MOT, so place your bets now what it will fail on :p

i always try to do a thorough inspection before an MOT, but it seems as though my cars always fail no matter what i do. when i take other people's cars to get MOT'd they always pass first time. my girlfriends punto passed last saturday with no problems, not even any recommendations. her previous car (saxo) also passed its MOT first time. i've never had a car pass its MOT first time in nearly 9 years of driving. i hate MOT's.

if you want to give your car a check over i'd recommend looking at the rubber perishables, track rod ends, antiroll bar drop links, wishbone bushes, cv boots, flexible brake hoses, basically anything with rubber, worn rubber will most likely fail an MOT, cars with low suspensions and big wheel stend to go though rubber parts more quickly due to the extra strain put on them.

also check the copper brake lines, any excessive corrosion (usually green fur) should be removed, then rub some oil onto the brake lines. you can easily fail because of a bit of surface corrosion even though the brake lines are still safe. give the exhaust a check over for bad rust or leaks, if you get some exhaust paste on small leaks it will prevent an emissions failure. i always add a bottle of injector cleaner a few hours before MOT to reduce emissions.

wearing a low top and a short skirt is probably your best bet, an MOT should be done while you wait, if you are half naked while you wait it can only help to divert attention away from the car. if i was a woman i'd never fail another MOT :)

It will pass first time :D
Just give the car a quick once over and you should be fine.

I tried that already, it doesn't work :( Mine has never passed - usually emissions (knackered exhaust usually).

i hate mots but in my opinion you might as well just get them to fix everything to make sure the car is safe.

the first year with the cinq it cost me a fortune to mot it

with the bravo am sure its gonna cost another fortune for its first mot with me as the owner (considering how much i have just had to fork out for with the brake issue that it had).

anyhow good luck am sure your cars will be fine.

Hi Sammiboo,

Just had MOT on my Brava...Guess I wasn't as lucky...but there you go...

Mine failed on few things:

1) Failed on the Number Plates (character spacing too wide) would you believe ! Funny, they were on the car when I bougth it, so why it managed passed last year at the same MOT station !!! Did the law only changed this year ?

2) Failed on the rear brake led strip because a few of the leds were blown (only 5 of the 10 leds were working)...I took it apart and managed to fix them all ...but I wish I didn't...what a waste of time...wasted £10 for those leds and a whole afternoon...It worked fine, but I fear they'll blow again when the rain gets in...in the end I bought a complete new unit...guess the cost...37 pounds !!!!

3) Failed on the rear orange bulb...because it wasn't orange enough...fair enough. I think they do fade over time.

...now the biggy...

4) Failed on Exhaust manifold at the engine...apparently some bolt broke, so the exhaust was leaking. So needed a new gasket and new bolts... apparently when they took the old gasket out, they broke another couple of bolts which they had to drill out ... my heart sank when I heard this. Do you remember in your previous post to this that you mentioned some noise. Well, the loud "ticking" noise, which I thought was severe tappets or water pump, turned out to be coming from this exhaust leak.

Anyway, now that's all done, the baby is superbly quiet again. What a relief. Although I can just about hear the "common problem" tappets, but it is almost unnoticeable. I'm a lot happier now I know it is not big engine problem.

So all in all, it's not too bad an MOT, if ruling out item 4. Bit surprised at cost of item 2. Pity I did not have time to get used parts.

Next year might be expensive...the MOT advise were:
a) Brake hose pipes showing signs of cracks ... not sure why both of them as one of them was changed last year ... possibly the dodgy mechanic I used last year.
b) Brake pipes rusty ... probably get these done at the next opportunity ... don't like these types of comments ...
c) headlight dip pattern fading...so looking at new set of headlights.

Anyone with any ideas on costs on changing brake pipes & hoses ?
