hi fellas im new to the land of fiat - anyway iv recently baut a 1.4 12v bravo very nice mechanicly sound!, but recently its starting to feel like iv made a big mastake - i can no longer drive it safely any more - basicaly when i first move off in 1st all seems fine for 2 seconds then "clunk" and the drive slips and aload of rattly noises start this happend every time i put it into a new gear, im quite good when it comes to cars usually so i put it up on axle stands and started the car - then put it into gear (whilst stationary off the ground) the "clunk" isnt there? instead a low rattling noise comes from the gearbox/diff??, (turning into a "bolts in a tin can noise" then i put it on full lock and reved it (in 2nd gear now) and there it was the "clunk" - does this mean the gear box is dead or the clutch or the joints? - i dont fancie driving it to a garage as its not really safe the way it is now so any halp would be really appreciated!!! thx guys

what the hell is the "clunk"!!!:bang:

start your car in nuetral.
does the noise get worse when you depress the clutch while still in nuetral.
have gears been hard to select.
if so the clunk could the thrust bearing (clutch release bearing) knocking on spline or hitting the pressure plate.
best to get someone who really knows to check it out.
a clutch kit is much cheaper than a gear box.
best to replace bearing -pressure plate and clutch all at once.
saves taking gear box out again at a later date.

could also be as simple as cv joint.
this is simply the draft shafts fexibles joints. try doing a full lock from left to right while driving slow in first or reverse gear. any knoicking or grating while on full lock could indicate worn cv joint.

clutchs can be brought here from £44 plus post and vat.

check oil level in gear box too.
.

im not going to be anywhere near as technical as runninggoose, but i can talk from my experience. when that happened to mine it was the diff that had died. as you say you are fairly handy with the old spanners id say get it to a garage or get someone to have a look (mobile mech) and upon there diagnosis repair. the diff on the 1.2 is fairlly easy to remove, and can be done with the box on the car, and i would anticipate the same for the 1.4
