Hi all my engine start made ticking noise its not there all the time i upload some video on YouTube if any one can tel me what its the problem thanks

That sounds like "top-end" or "tappet" noise, where there is too much clearance between the valve and camshaft (via the tappets and gap) on one or more valves.

If yours is a 1.2 16v then it has hydraulic tappets (self-adjusting) so the only thing you can do (apart from a compression test to check health) is to change the oil (maybe flush it to clear any old residues) to a good quality 10W/40 semi-synthetic.

Mine can go a little noisy when cold, when it was really bad after I first got the car an oil change sorted it out. If one of the oilways to the tappets is a bit blocked then it may not work (i.e. adjust) properly.

I would personally run it with a Diesel-spec 10W/40 oil during the next period, there are extra detergents that will gently clean old deposits from the engine and sump etc.

Ok just been checking the oil an the dipstick is dry i was use TITAN SYN MC 10W-40 BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY LEFT CAN I USE DIFFERENT BRAND WITH SAME VISCOSITY ? THANKS

Yeah you can as long as it's the same spec.

Though i think given your dipstick is dry, i'd be draining whatever is hopefully still the sump and changing the filter and just putting all the new stuff in anyway......

i also have the problem in 1.4 engine, it mostly happens when the engine heat is above the halfway mark, i did a oil change, but didnt replace the filter. The ticking noise is soo ugly and i shift the gears below 2000rpm.

If you have the old 1.4 12V engine this is serious problem, you must do some maintenance quickly....

With these engines the small oil pipes supplying oil to the camshaft become blocked and there is oil starvation to some parts of the camshaft, this will then become badly worn.

You should remove the spray bar and pipes on top of the engine, and clean them very well in a solvent. Then give the engine an oil flush with a proper additive or flushing oil, this should remove any sediments. Drain the oil for a long time (6 hours) so that all the nasty stuff is completely removed.

If you did an oil change then you should have changed the filter because this holds quite a lot of old oil as well as trapped muck and sediments. When you have serviced the oil pipes (and stopped the noise) then add some engine flush and drain the oil again, start with everything clean.

As I said before, an older spec oil for Diesel engines will clean the engine better because of the extra detergents.

Hi bluejohn125,

thanks for the reply, the mechanic told that its not a huge issue earlier. since a month, i have been running the car 2 or 3 days per week with that ugly noise,
so in summary : change oil filter, clean the valves and pipes and flush the engine? :)

BTW my make is MK1 petrol, used semi-synthetic in the last service(about 2wks ago)

Hi thanks done it now change the oil and filter now its nice and quiet do not know where the oil goes do not have any leak but i didn't check the oil about 12 months so now i will do regular check thanks for the help

I was gonna type it hehe, i did clean the engine valves and all, and also changed the oil filter. that did the job. Went reasonably fast to check if there is the ticking noise after that, nope. job success :)
