That's some bad rust you have there!

I got told soaking rust (or rubbing it) with coco cola can remove rust but I've got no rust so haven't been able to test this but maybe someone can confirm this theory? I mean it makes a old penny shine if soaked? But I would defiantly paint over

Google HAMMERITE or look it up on eBay that's got good reviews and to colour it I'd say use use spray paint from pound land I used it on my cars wheels and they come out really nice took me 5 cans to do all my wheels, four cans did it but I had one for touch ups (I'd show you photos but I'm using my girlfriends phone as mines dead)

Maybe just swap subframe?

Personally I'd attack it with anglegrinder wirewheel, phosporic acid and such, but that looks more than surface rust as it has started flaking.

You'd have to call a few of your local garages up and ask for a quote but a garage would rather replace I'd imagine as its easier and less time consuming for them but I don't think it'd be a cheep job myself

Forget replacing the subframe unless it has really rusted through... they are very hard to find. It is a common fault but most scrapyards don't save the subframes when they break a car.

You have to do a proper repair... as was said above get it inside a garage and up in the air, grind and rub away all the rust then treat with a rust-killer / converter solution (Hammerite do small jars), then paint with 2 thick coats of Hammerite paint.

If you can spray someWaxoyl or similar into the subframe from above this will help to preserve it also.
