Hi guys,

First Time using the forum. I've got a 1.9 105 JTD Brava which have been increbible reliable for the last 2 years. The last 4 weekends the Starter Motor (SM) has been very grumbly and finally on Thursday I think it has given up the ghost.

So.

- 4 weeks grumbly start up for starter motor.
- Thursday, it just stopped cranking.
- Have checked battery condition and voltage which is okay.
- With lights on they don't dim when I try to start it.

Therefore am I correct in thinking that its the SM?

If it is I can't seem to find a removal/refit for SM for my engine, could someone give me a run through?

Once the SM is off the car should I check that it?
Is this just a case of connecting a car battery, +ve battery to +ve SM and -ve battery to SM case?

Whats the best plan? Is it easy to clean/recondition a SM yourself? Or should I pick up one from scrappy, as long as I check it works (SM and solenoid)? Or should i buy new?

I'll be very much be glad of the help.

Cheers

Alex

Hi Alex, never touched it on my JTD,
but generally your description fits the bill, ( lazy is the trade term..crawling over)

dead / low battery would be dim lights ,

I've always managed to resurrect all the starters I've stripped,
..JUST a good clean.. basically all the dust from the worn-out brushes gums up the works,
I clean out with petrol , then , reassemble,

maybe worth looking on e-bayt , I think new is£$£$£$ , not worth it for a 10 year old car,

generally removal is easy ,
3 bolts and 2 wires,
just access can be awkward.

good luck,
Charlie

Thanks for your reply Charlie.

Will have a go at resurrection first, monies tight at the mo!!

Where abouts it the SM located on the Jtd engine is it around the back? Best to get to from underneath?

Okay starter motors off the car, taken it a part and most of it is okay!!

But the brushes are all none existant apart from one.

Doesn't anyone know of somewhere that does repair parts for BOSCH starter motors!! I'd rather not spend money where i don't have too.
