Hi all

I have a fiat brava sx 1.4 which is giving me all sorts of trouble. i went to the car garage and they did an ecu diag test. it resulted that the problems are coming from the throttle body. instead of helping me they told me that part is no longer in production..

instead of giving up i would like to give it a go myself, perhaps cleaning it a bit and then if it does not help replace it. can anyone direct me to some steps on how to take the throttle body out and give it a clean? some diagrams or photos perhaps?

thanks for all your help

You can use carb cleaner on a throttle body, Once dismantled spray plenty of carb cleaner and wait until dry 40 mins or so. Whats the symptoms your getting?

Can you find second hand parts at scrapyards or eBay perhaps?

If its the throttle potentiometer you will need a new throttle body, I was quoted £750 two years ago and the part was availiable at Fiat and Motorfactors. Luckily I found one in a scrap yard for £15 that looked new (all machined surfaces where clean and it was as good as new.)

If its the Idle controll motor they are fairly cheap and easy to find new or used.

See my thread here; I had a faulty throttle potentiometer.

The engine does not work smoothly and at times it stalls...also the injector light on the dashboard lights up when it does so...

The problem is that I am not a mechanic and I need an beginner's manual and how to dismantle the throttle body and give it a clean...is there a manual or a diagram which you can provide me with?

Thanks a million

Here goes for the 1.4 12V model:
- pag1 throttle.jpg
-pag2 throttle.jpg
-pag3 throttle.jpg

Take care when putting it back together, is best to mark the initial place (as said in another thread) with some paint.
Hope it helps.

FUNNY ENOUGH I HAVE SAME SYMPTOMS. My car injector light comes on, it stalls after its warmed up, and once it stalls wont start again until cooled down. I have a fiat brava 1.4 sx 12v aswell and its exactly the same symptoms, what iv found so far is it can be the lambda sensor (changed but doesnt stop light) and crankshaft sensor, which causes the stalling. Im in the middle of refitting the new one, and tomorrow im gonna give the car new service and clean up the throttle boddy, Hope it works, if anyone sorts the problem thats the same as ours then let us know the trick please. Thanks

for Karl1990 - and others
i have the same 1.4 12v engine
mine had a habit of stalling when warm.
it turned out to be the stepper motor.
It had lost the fine control necessary for idling.
I had no money to buy an other one so I improvised:
on my TB i have a small screw ( small torx ) that pushes on the stepper motor (on the part that moves)
what i did was i screwed it in a few turns until the car wouldn't stall when idling or when when rolling down the road and putting the car in neutral (it would sometimes die when i did this).

What i should mention:
-when the engine is cold the stepper motor revs the engine to 1500-1600rpm
-when warm the engine stays at about 850-900rpm ( witch i think is normal)
-the revs sometimes +/- ~40rpm ( what do you expect if the stepper motor isn't working)

I know of some people that fixed this by adding a few washers between the TB and stepper motor ( my stepper motor wouldn't come off the TB )

where is the stepper motor, and what do i need to do? did your car stall when when warm, and then you have to wait for it to cool down again

no, my car didn't do that.
describe how the car doesn't start when warm.
-does it at least turn? it it doesn't turn .. the starter motor is at fault=> warn bushes inside the starter motor.
-if it turns but will not start then Prilliant03 might be right.

Hi iv changed the rpm/crank sensor but still doing it. thats what i was told aswell. The problem is that the car starts fine. idles a bit rough, revs go up and down, after i do about 10miles or so the engine will stall and wont restart again until cool (or if i take lead of battery and back on again) iv changed the lambda sensor, old one was broken around the edge, but new one in and no difference really, the car has alot of milege so i expect it to have some smoke but it does smoke a bit, Its not the head gasket so im not to sure what the problem is. Any idea's i assumed that was your problem aswell  (n) :bang:

OL And yea it turns over after its warm but just dont start and if it does it will cut straight back out

it wasn't the lambda sensor car runs with and without it.
i think it's a loose connection somewhere that gets pulled apart by the heat that warps different parts.
check:
- coil pack
-check that injector is spraying
- check all connections: even relays and fuses ( remove spray with cleaner put back)
if this fails go further: check every wire ( important ones alt least) expecialy crank sensor wires (use a ohm meter connect both ends of wire to ohmmeter leads expect to see 0 ohm on a good wire)
use contact cleaner on each connection ( especially on ECU and crank sensor connections )
check spark /sparkplugs HT leads
