This morning my partner left to attend a blood donation session and the JTD refused to start. The glow plug lamp goes out as it should, and the engine turns over just fine, but no intention of actually coughing into life. I've tried all 3 ignition keys with the same result.

Needless to say this has happened at a time when we both really need our cars as we're working a lot over the next few days and nights. Sharing one car will be a nightmare. And of course it's p*ssing down rain right now. Perfect for under-bonnet acrobatics.

Any suggestions folks? This really is quite urgent.

Hate to say it, but I'm really begining to regret buying this car. It's wonderful when it's working, but the list of faults just seems to keep getting longer. This is supposed to be my better half's daily transport, but she's currently having to use my old Fiesta. The Bravo just can't be trusted to work properly

Cam sensor or Crank sensor maybe?

The immobiliser would flash up a dash warning, do you have any warning lights on?

Maybe a scan of the ECU with an EOBD tool would throw some light on this.

You need to be sure you have fuel squirting from the injectors & a good clean air filter too.

Warning lights are all behaving normally. Engine has been running well but there has been the occasional non start issue. This leads me to believe it's not a fuse. That wouldn't lead to an intermitent fault.

Would a faulty crank sensor be likely to casue intermitent issues? I'm not keen on throwing parts at the car in blind hope :(

I don't have access to an EOBD tool and the car can't be moved now. I'm just glad it decided to stop working at home rather than miles away.

When the crank senor went on my JTD it too was an intermittent fault but it only happened when hot and always re started when it had cooled down.
But it could still be the same issue i guess.

Hi

My JTD has been to my family service, also abused a bit, for 12 years now and all it has replaced was two mafs, one crank sensor and two gaiters on one side (defective gaiter to start with, replaced twice with bad quality ones).
Anyhow, this shouldn't help in solving your problem, but there's hope in your car .
It's not easy to make remote diagnosis but have checked the basics?
- fuel
- as already mentioned, lights on the dashboard, in particular the code light
- does your car have any alarm? it could be inhibiting something
- air filter clogged

Failing these easy checks, and if the starter cranks well, it doesn't come to life if a) it has no sufficient fuel supply; b) air supply; c) something wrong with the electronics (but then most likely you would have some sort of light on?

£35 for a reasonable one... gotta be good value IMO. Anyhow... one way or another fixing ANY car is going to cost, trick is to choose the lowest cost.

Not something I can really afford to splash out on before the end of the month. I guess if I bought a crank position sensor and it turned out to not be needed, I could at least sell it on EBay.

She lives!!

Have to say, that was a pig of a job, especially given that I had to work outside and it was chucking down rain all day. It's almost like somebody at Fiat deliberately put the crank sensor in the most difficult to reach place.

My shoulders are aching!

Glad you got a first time fix.

I've had to do that job on a 2.4 JTD and yes, its a pain! Unusual for it to stop working as you described - as has already been said they tend to break down under heat giving you a 'wont start from hot' issue.

DID IT DO THE JOB MATE? IS YOUR CAR RUNNING OK NOW
