Help. 3 of my door handles are crumbling away.
Why is this?
Also the heat shield behind the engine is rattling at around 2400rpm and is doing my head in.
Will it matter if I remove it?
Whats its purpose?
Finally how much will replacing the door handles cost me.

Cheers
Carl. (y)

The door handles on my Brava are also the same (all four in fact). I think it is just the 'soft rubber' materials used on the outside of the handles, which are not really suited to our environment, thus erode over time due to wear & tear, weather, and the like. I much prefer hard plastic. I had thought about getting them changed, but did not see the point if the replaced ones will erode later on. It's not too ugly...so probably live with it.

Another member "Trev_M" described something in the Technical section about fixing the heat shield. You might want to look over there, and see if it helps you out. I had the similar problem quite some time ago on a different make of car and I did a similar thing as Trev_M suggested to sorted it out.

I wouldn't remove the heat shield because I think it helps to keep the heat from your hot exhaust pipe from eating into (or melting) the bottom of the car over time (perhaps not MOT related initially, but will certainly become a MOT issue if you have to do welding down there). The heat shield is a meshed thing to help distribute the heat. I also think it helps to keep some of the splashed water out off the underside of the car, thus may help to slow down rusting process down there (a little perhaps !).

My heat sheild was rattling, and the screws were rusted so solid they wouldn't budge. After a load of fiddling, I simply bent out the corners of the heatsheild, flaring them out, et voila! No more rattles for the last 6 months or so!

where abouts is this heat shield and wat does it look like i cant say ive looked behind my engine properly, except to find the gromit for my amp wireing. my car also rattles at 2-3 rpm. give me a clue so i can hav a gander tommorrrow mornin it would make me so happy to finaly get rid of that infernal rattle.

My rattle is just infront of the engine block ontop of the naifold. Also rattles at 2.5k. Gonna cut out the little bit thats catching.

Also both my handles have deteriorated over winter. Should be more careful with that de-icer as that's what seems to cause it. Managed to get hold of a couple of marea handles tho which arent made of the cheap rubber. They'll be sprayed up the same colour as the car and on in the next 2 weeks
