Hi im new here i bought a 51 plate bravo 1.6 16v sx 2 months ago.
Yesterday i triedto overtake at about 40 mph in 4th the car started to drop speed so i dropped to third and put the foot down.
Engine management light came on orange and started to flash, i slowed down qnd came to a roundabout and car shuddered heavily and stalled i managed to start it again but every time i slow down it does the same. The car is making a heavy raquet and i have to keep the revs up to stop it from stalling. I took it to a garage and he said could be spark plugs so he replaced them and no change. He said coil packs fine as all plugs are sparking but he wont be able to look at it again til monday. Has anyone had this issue? What was the fix? Ive just bought the car and really hope it doesnt need scrapped!

Thanks

I had similar problems with my 1.2 Brava about a year ago turned out it was one of the HT Leads, a new set solved the problem.

Would that not mean the plugs wouldnt spark? The mechanic said they were all sparking? He said its only running on three cylinders though.

Anybody else have any ideas on this? Just went and started the car and it turned over no bother but i think i can smell petrol? I didnt drive it anywhere just checking it! The engine light is still flashing aswell.

Drove the car down to the garage and he was shut! Anyway had a look under the bonnet when i came back and spotted a drip behind the back right hand side of the engine. Looks like its been dripping for a while? Anyone any ideas what that is?

Btw this is my first car and have absolutely no clue when it comes down to the mechanics!

Thanks

if i was you chap check all around the gearbox and make sure there is no big lumps of ally missing and there may be a strong smell of gearbox oil i drove my girlfriends 1.2 brava to work 20 miles ish fine parked up then dinner time jumped in it pulled away 500 yards or so later shuddering and engine man light cam on had to drive it back to work and heard a loud bang and the smell of gearbox oil when i looked i havent had a good look yet might i say there was a big lump of gearbox had broken off and it looks like its part of the diff housing i guess its shut down to 3 cyls on hers as a safty thing worth a look though chap you never know

Hi guys thanks for all the replys. Just to let you all know that ive had it fixed there was little compression in cylinder 2 and no compression in cylinder 4. Turns out one of the valves in cylinder 4 had blown and there was a huge hole in it about the size of a 5p piece! The head and valves were covered in carbon so all has been cleaned up valve replaced and car is running like a dream now! Cost me £350. Had a couple of probs with fuel leaking but thats all sorted now free of charge! But thats another story! Time to start enjoying it now so im off to pick up a full set of tsw venom wheels with tyres for 75 quid! Gd times!
