Hi my gear stick is freely moving and stuck in first gear. The gear stick only moves forwards and backwards and not side to side. Can anyone explain to me how to fix this issue?

That sounds like one of the actual clips holding the link cables has fell off or broken with age. This can be found at the back of the engine near the starter and is bolted to the gearbox. To get out of gear, have someone in the car depress the clutch and change gear on top of the gearbox to neutral (one of the linkage cables goes into it and will have a sort of bellows style boot at the end) its in neutral when you can move this towards you and away from you.
