Coming back home today from a long trip my power steering just cut out.
I have a bravo JTD 1.9. Felt like trying to turn a tank around!

Anyone have any ideas why, and how much I'm looking at damages wise?

Ta muchly.

It wont be the belt because it wouldn't be charging. On the JTD the air con (if fitted) power steering and the alternator all drive off the same belt.

It will be either power steering fluid loss due to damaged pipe or at worst leaking steering rack. More than likely failed pipe, which would cause a loud grinding noise when the pump started running dry, Or the pump is nakard.

Not sure on prices depends if you do it yourself or get garage to do it.

I have no idea what I'm looking for under the bonnet! I will have a look this morning and see if anything out of the ordinary, hopefully then it's something minor and won't be too bad.
I don't have air con.

Thanks to you both.

I assume the fluid level was OK at last weeks check, so you will notice if its dropped/missing.

Last weeks check?
Is it a special date in the calender you are meant to check, or am I just missing something... ;)

Every week, all good boys walk around their cars and check things like tyre condition and pressures and wiper condition- call it rubber checks

Under the bonnet they check fluid levels, belt condition, battery connections and for leaks

Gals also need to do this weekly or flash those eyes and get some sap to do it for them:)

Thats it exactly. Then you know if something is missing.

Hi, had the same problem with my grande punto 1.4 16v.

After a trip to the garage and being hooked up to the computer, problem persisted! only happened when it was really cold outside and went over bumps or round corners fast (g force)...... making sense yet? stupid battery connection are renound for coming loose on fiat cars! RAC bloke found the problem with mine in seconds..... check your battery connections! x (y)

Grande Puntos have electric power steering. All hydraulic on Bravos of this age. And very nice it is too, not so expensive to fix when things go wrong

Part of your weekly checks, check your battery terminal connections for tightness
