Hi, Can anyone tell me if this engine is fitted with a variator, if so where is it situated on the engine. And if gone would it make top end sound like a tractor or diesel. Or does it sound like cam and tappet failure.
Thanks
Kevin

If your dash has a mechanical odometer then its a mk1 147bhp non-variator type from factory. Im not sure about the sounds hopefully someone else can answer that one.
hi mate but all mk1s have variator and bolted onto the threaded end of the camshaft. if this fails it makes a diesel sound in the first start and also a huge power loss after 4000-4500rpm.because after that rpm it transmits the rotation to the shaft, thereby varying the the timing of the inlet valves by an advance of 9 degrees.
again the construction of the device involves a main assembly fitted on the inlet camshaft which has the task of altering the angular position of the actual shaft in relation to the drive pulley according to the manual (y)

Hi, siniper
Thanks for all the details, has anyone got any pictures of this variator please. On the mk1.
regards
kevin

Hi, thanks adrian
But I am confused now as you said I don't have a variator on the Mk1, but siniper says they are fitted to the Mk1's. Are they just fitted to the 155's or the 147's as well. Thanks for the pics.

hi Adrian
I have a 98 mk1 hgt and %100 sure that it has a phase transformer solenoid valve thus a variator too.
cheers

Sorry kevin siniper is correct I mistakenly thought the Mk1 did not have a variator.

Thank you for correcting my mistake siniper, I have rechecked my manual

Thanks All for the response, now i've got to the bottom of it, you can probably guess my next question. How can you check its operating properly. And also is there a way of checking coil packs with a multimeter.

Thanks
kevin

The Variator soleniod is controlled by a single relay.

i cant honestly say you would notice much of a difference if it wasnt working correctly, i dont notice a difference on my turbo if i unplug it but the turbo spools where the variator would turn off anyway.

between injector 1 & 2 there is a 2 pin plug, this is the variator soleniod, you can attach a multimeter to the pins ant measure the voltage as the revs increase, you should see the voltage drop off around 3500rpm, this will tell you if the ECU/relay are working.

Hi, and thanks bulldog, but have had the car to bits today, and I would imagine if a variator is fitted it would be sticking out by the battery end. No sign of one. So back to the drawing board. Also checked coil packs with multimeter and all five show 0.7 ohms would this mean there ok. Or this to much.
Thanks
kevin

Kevin,

The variator is at the cam pully end, you would be able to see it if you removed the cam cover.

i'll see if i have a photo that shows it later.
