From what I can make out from your pic and pics in my haynes manual I think this is the hot air inlet pipe that runs between the top of the exhaust shield and the inlet ducting before the air filter. It is used to help the car warm up quicker in colder weather. There should be some vacuum connections on a valve in the air inlet this opens and closes depending on amount of vacuum to let in the hot air. I used to quite regularly run my older cars which had this system on it without it, as I could never find the right kind of pipe to replace the original.
