Hi,

I have a 1998 Fiat Bravo 1.9 TD 100sx. The last few days it hasn't been starting, just turns over but doesn't fire up, takes about 5 minutes of constant sticking my foot on the fuel peddle & holding onto the key. When it does eventually start up it kicks out a load of white smoke (this also happens when the car is warm & i put my foot down) After the first morning start it has no problems starting for the rest of the day. When trying to start it, there is a knocking sound (kinda like metal knocking) that seems to come from the left hand side of the engine, it's very subtle (this then goes, but sometimes i can hear it again when it's idling) Does anyone know what this could be please? I've put anti freeze in it, also this started the morning after i put some diesel in it from running it really low.

Thank you. :bang:

Is the glow plug light taking longer to go out?

Have you tried heating two or three times before starting?

Cheers

Hi,

I've noticed from when i brought it that the glow plug light goes off & then flashes. Not sure if that is normal. It goes out after about 2 minutes of flashing.

I let it light up & go out about 6 times before starting it but made no difference. :(

Shouldn't flash, rtfm and rectify.

Sounds like the plugs aren't heating.

White smoke is unburnt diesel.

Hi,

Sorry what does rtfm mean?

How would i go about sorting the plugs out, is it a big job, would i be able to do it myself, is it like changing spark plugs?

Thanks again.

'rtfm' means 'read the flipping manual'. The handbook should give an indication of what is wrong.

I have not done heater plugs on that engine, so have a wee peek to see if they are visible, that wiill give you a hint as to how difficult they are to replace. You are looking for heavy gauge electrical connectors attached, usually in series, to one per cylinder.

your glow plugs are duff, so get them changed asap or you will damage the starter and battery trying to start it like this. tbh its not a job for the inexperienced, they are difficult to get at, and correct tools are needed.. best left to a garage.

Thanks a million. Went to a garage today, they diagnosed the plugs as being faulty. So hope it will be able to start tomorrow to enable me to get there to get it sorted out.

Thanks again for all your help.
