Any body done this and what were your results? mines a 1.6

Thinking of either grooved discs from red dot or somewhere but also heard about 1.8 discs?
just wanted thoughts please?

Technically you wont get no vast improvement unless your car is on a track and the brakes are getting hot most of the time.

If your brakes are already vented, leave the current setup.

If you want to upgrade the brakes you can fit the 1.8 Fiat Bravo Front Brake Callipers, vented discs and pads for better braking. The Bravo HGT rear disc conversion will not improve the braking, so dont bother unless you want it for appearance reasons.
 
You can do the 1.8 brake conversion, have done myself, but in my opinion is a lot of work for little gain. I have heard however the HGT rear brake conversion is worth it, contrary to what joske has said (plus it would look better).

Good quality pads would probably be the easiest and cheapest option, go for some EBC greenstuff or similar.
 
Well having done the rear disc conversion and having first hand experience not just hearing it from others, i can honestly say the rear disc conversion will give you no difference in braking as 80% of the work is done on the front brakes not rear.
 
Yeah i did the conversion about 5 years ago, it does look much better than drums.

Ahhh can see now, so it doesn't give any more power even if you put some good quality or sticky pads in?
 
Theres definately no difference with the rears. I fitted Ferodo Performance pads to the front and that did make a small difference, but the rears where original fiat pads, when I did change them for Ferodo ones it made bugger all difference.

To improve the braking concentrate on the front brakes. Solid pads are much better than drilled unless your on a track, but for road use, solid discs and good quality pads is all you need.
 
Out of intrest, how hard was the rear conversion? Ive done the 1.8 conversion on the front but that was a bolt for bolt swap. The rears just as easy? Also what bits would you need?

Aslong as you have all the parts off a doner car its not that difficult, the only messing i did was adapting the brake lines. The rest is technically removing drums, refitting calliper mounts, disc guards, callipers, discs, hand brake cables, brake pads and brake lines. The hubs you dont need to change.
 
OK thanks for all the help, when u say vented do u mean the drilled and/or grooved discs or is there a way to get air to them? yeah i think ill leave the rears tbh, still some good pads sounds like a good idea, undecided on aftermarket or 1.8 discs

Cant remember what brakes pad i bought but they cost 30 quid from a trade store.
 
Klemster i know you dont like me but how is that contradicting myself? The only benefit i can see for changing to 1.8 calipers/disks/pads is the vented disks, which would only be beneficial on a track? Unless you drive like a totally nutter everywhere.
Or if you are reffering to doing it with little gain then how was i supposed to know till i tried it?
 
in my experience the 1.8 breaks stop the car remarkably quickly and they tend to heat quite well althou i have managed to heat them beyond use but that was with more than half worn pads and some serious spirited driving

i have all new pads disks now standard magneti mareli so i'll see how that goes

I have try to convert to ven. dics from a Marea 1.8 ->(same as Bravo)
But there don't fit the Brava.
You will also need to change the front wheel hub and no doubt shock absorber also I am not sure that your drag axle fits Marea/Bravo 1.8-> front hub
I gave up and bought some sports brake pads. Expensive but they WORK and cheaper than changing the whole s...

rear disks and callipers of a marea estate will fit perfectly, you will need atleast 14" rims the callipers, carriers mounting plates for the hub too.

then iirc it all just bolts on no fabricating needed.

Yes, straight swap (y) you can either do the conversion with or with out taking the axle out. It is easier to do it with the axle in.

Youll need handbrake cables (2 long ones and the short one) calipers+carriers, discs+pads, hub spacer, dust guard, appropiate pipes

  • Remove your wheels and drums
  • Remove the exhaust
  • Disconnect all the springs, remove the shoes and handbrake cables
  • Take off the hub and spacer
  • Remove the wheel cylinder and plug the pipe up
  • Remove the backing plate
  • Clean everything and prepare to put the discs on

  • Start with the dust guard, hub and spacer (guard, spacer then hub)
  • Fit the disc then carrier
  • Then the calipers and pads
  • Attach the brake hose and fix it in position
  • Attach the pipe to the hose then remove the old pipe quickly and screw in the new pipe (for minimal loss of fluid)
  • Attach the new handbrake cables, including the one that goes into the handbrake (adjuster) as it is slightly shorter
  • Bleed the brakes and enjoy

Swapping the axle means that you can do the axle up on the ground. Same procedure, just drop the tank first.

Ive done both ways, with the axle out was my favorite as I could do the axle up :) It is up to yourself what one to do though

Have you looked at different compounds of friction materiel? the likes of willwood and AP offer a verity of pad compound to fit 1 caliper type and the difference is remarkable I have no idea of the availability for standard calipers but softer pads tend to bite harder there for stop quicker.
what options are available for hgt owners does anyone know??
