Hi guys. I've actually got around to working on the brava again! I replaced the engine last year and due to a bottom end knock (1.6 16v MK1) and put in a MK2 1.6 engine with the MK1 manifold on. Got the loom in this afternoon and connected all the sensors etc. Then i tried to start it on a jump from the punto.
Sometimes it will start with very little effort. Then you can switch it off and try it again and it will just crank over, occasionally firing a cylinder. as its doing this, the CODE light will occasionally illuminate and the injector light aswell. The rev counter shoots about in random patterns, sometimes jumping right off the scale. The battery light is always illuminated. Even when it does start, it will often cut out a short while later.

Got some mobile clips:

Engine running. Shut it off and try to restart...

Engine starting straight away, even though nothings changed...

Righty, I swapped the battery over with my puntos battery (i.e. a known good battery) and the symptoms are identical. All connections have been checked and sprayed with contact cleaner. Tried a jumplead to make sure the engine had a good earth, also tried it on the alternator, and to the ECUs earth lead. Same thing :(

I shall take a look tomorrow :) What has occured to me by reading that huge brava pdf is that I've mounted the ECU earth to the battery tray rather than the head of the engine. Doubt it will make any difference since its still earthed but ill give that a shot too.

Thought i'd cracked it earlier this evening... there are 2x 3pin connectors at the front of the wiring loom. One of which was connected to the crankshaft sensor, the other to the detonation sensor. Just happened to glance at the old engine and noticed there was no detonation sensor on the MK1 engine. So where did the other connector on the loom used to go? hidden behind the timing belt cover is a 3pin camshaft sensor - this is not on the MK2 engine. So i fitted the camshaft sprocket and sensor to the MK2 engine and connected it all up, but still no joy :( same again. Its suprising it ran at all without its camshaft signal... even more suprising it ran when it was recieving a detonation signal where it was expecting its camshaft signal. I presume the ECU relies upon the crankshaft signal alone for fueling and ignition timing when the camshaft sensor gives erroneous readings. Hope i haven't damaged the ECU by having it wired incorrectly :(

is the loom earthed properly, when i rebuilt my cinq - i left one earth of my loom and it went a bit nuts

Excellent :D That was EXACTLY it... was checking through the loom and came across the earth cable which hadn't been connected - it was just resting against the engine. so much for me checking and cleaning all the connections last night

Thanks arc :)
