Does anyone know if the info to set up the timing would come with the official timing tool kit? as I may have to buy one tomorrow unless someone could lend me one in the Leeds/Bradford area?
Also could someone supply me with the timing info if not as I have left my Haynes manual in my student flat 100 miles away.
Cheers for any help,
Anthony

you need to buy the tool, i wouldn't attempt it without it. not sure what an offical timing tool kit is, but if the tool came with that, then it'd sat.

to time it i would;

jack car up, remove drivers side wheel.
take the spark plugs out
remove cam lock hole cover
turn engine till tool can be inserted to lock cam
put car in gear.
jam the brakes on with a large stick wedged from pedal to seat (to lock the bottom end in place)
slacken off the camshaft sprocket
slack off tensioner
remove aux drive pulley
remove old belt
remove old tensioner
fit new tensioner
fit belt, tension correctly
tightne cam sprocket
remove cam lock tool, take out of gear
turn over by hand to check for any bad noises or lockups
refit all the other bits u took off and fire it up

Cheers, im buying the tool from an official fiat parts place so if there is a genuine fiat tool kit it will be, i might be talking ******** in which case ignore that statement. I was just wanting to know if i could expect the tool kit to come with the info or if I should find out the info tonight so i can do the timing tomorrow. Just done the head gasket so everything is off already. Hoping I can get it back on the road tomorrow, feeling lost without it since tuesday :(
Cheers,
Anthony

go here; http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/

search for; S4P649 (cam lock tool, £21.52)
S4P1911 (timing belt and tensioner, £38.27)

if you have had the head off, you need to set the bottom end as well. you need all 4 pistons level. i use 4 equal length dowels stuck in the spark plug holes for this. once they are all level, the bottom end is in the right place.

Hmm wish id known about that a few days ago, dont wanna wait till next week to get it done, might just fork out then try and sell the kit afterwards.
Alot of ppl talk about getting the pistons to TDC, just out of interest and not that i doubt you but why do you say to level all they cylinders?
Cheers, Ant

TDC is used as a timing event on an engine. it is easy to find, and it is on some engines used as a marker when timing the engine.

however.. imagine you have the engine at TDC (so piston number 1 is at the top of the cylinder, and then you are turning the top end to line up the cam.. you're going to smack the valves into cylinder number.

because of this, the timinig posistion is all 4 pistons level (far away from the valves) with no chance of damage when you are setting the top end!

Ahh makes sense! cheers for the advice, hope it goes smoothly tomorrow now as this is my first major mechanical challenge :p
