hi can anyone help me i have a fiat bravo hgt and want to fit a turbo to it can i use my own engine and fit a turbo out of a fiat coupe or would i have to change the whole engine? my car is a p reg one your help would be helpful

it's not as simple as that i'm afraid

a read of this will give you some idea, and i'm sure there's other similar storys/guides
https://www.fiatforum.com/marea/153748-first-uk-marea-turbo-build-thread.html
though i have read in the cinq pages about using a low pressure turbo with standard internals, don't know if it'd be possible on these engines due to higher states of tune to start with though? but conversion would be a lot more easier using a standard 20vt manifold. hmmmm... (though in my case it'd be 16v)

but i already have a 5 cyl 20 valve engine in my bravo just looking to add a turbo to it would that not make it easier to fit on my engine or would i have to put an engine out of a coupe in it

internally the 20vt engine is different with lower compression, and probably stronger parts than the non turbo version. converting non-turbo to turbo would be just as expensive and probably more work than changing the engine for something that is already set up properly in the first place.

As said the engines internally are different. In short.
The 20v turbo has uprated pistons to create lower compression, a stronger crank shaft, different cams, bigger injectors, different ECU, different exhaust manifold, different induction manifold, bigger throttle body and has stronger valves too.
The turbo runs boost pressure at 1 bar.

the turbo also has, a Turbo, an oil cooler, an intercooler + pipes.
Then the suspension is uprated with Much bigger discs and a longer ratio gearbox with a much stronger clutch.

If you do a conversion you would possibly be able to use a 20vt downpipe plus turbo etc. You would need some form of ECU upgrade and mapping to tailor it to the engine spec.

If running very low boost from the turbo you should be ok with the stock internals but they will be the weak point.

Compression may possibly need reducing, it can be done via a fabricated metal plate to replace the head gasket. Otherwise pre detonation will occur and this can cause severe damage.

Unless you are going to do it properly then you will be running a very detuned turbo say 180bhp and the cost will be huuuuuuuuge.

By far the cheapest solution but still expensive is to transplant a coupe turbo engine. this is still costly and you have to find the best mechanical donor car money can buy. The benefits of this are that you get all the suspension, gearbox, brakes as well.

^ what he said, honestly, when are people going to stop thinking they can just strap a turbo to the HGT and think thats all that's needed.

more to the point, if you have to ask the question, your not capable of doing the work

I think you'll find one of the reasons of asking questions is to gain the knowledge required to what you are wanting to.

There was a time when I couldn't change spark plugs. After asking a few questions I now have a 126 in half it's component parts and am confident I can put it back together aswell. ;)

I also remember when Bulldog was first asking about strapping a turbo onto the 147 engine for a low boost setup and now see what he has done. ;)
