I have a Fiat Bravo HGT with the following problem;
The engine cuts out at around 4000rpm, the relays in the glove box cut out, its not the rev limiter. The rev counter jumps about 500 rpm before it cuts out, once you dipped the clutch and the revs actually drop the engine restarts.
Fiat changed the camshaft sensor and charged a fortune and then blamed the ECU. I have had the ECU checked seperately and its OK

Does anyone have any ideas??
Is it the crankshaft sensor??
Does anyone know the protocol of the 2 core ECU interface??

Thanks

Honestly, I don't know.

What is the easiest way to find out??

I know that the cambelt was changed prior to purchase so it may be a possiblity that its been incorrectly assembled.

Look at the engine oil filler cap. If you have VVT then there will be a solenoid just behind the cap. About 60mm x 25mm diameter with the plug on top and fixed to the block with two torq screws.
If the timing is already out then the engine could theoretically cut out when the solenoid releases at 4800rpm.

If it s a HGT 147 then it isnt VVT, if its a 155 then it is (Thats mk1 and mk2)
I had a similar problem on a Nov 2000 HGT155 a few years ago and it was down to the throttle body. It also used to "stick" as well, like I really needed to go into a roundabout at 5,000rpm!

Thanks Guys

It sounds like I'll have to have the motor out it is a 155bhp VVT.

Does any one know where I can get a Haynes manual (Or similar), to assit in retiming the thing.

problem is the haynes bravo manual doesn't cover the hgt's, I guess the coupe one would cover the 147 hgt as it's the same lump as the coop 2.0 NA, and is probably the closest match you'll find. It wont cover vvt though, but will the throttle bodies.
someone feel free to correct me if the info is available from somewhere

I really just need details on how to set the timing rather that a complete manual, any thing helps, or I'll have to figure it out from scratch.

Try here:
I've had VVT problems (On my P97 147, work that one out). The engine just ran very rought when I came down from 4800rpm as the solenoid was sticking in. I stripped and cleaned the solenoid and put some valve train cleaner into the oil. SAve d me a £300 bill from Fiat just to look at it.
