hi i have a fiat bravo 1997 1.4 12v it has rear drums i have just fit new shoes and cylinders the breaks work good and i have bled them all up, the handbrake works but only when its right at the top. does anyone know if the brakes shoes are self-adjusting. is there adjustment on the handbrake cable on the handbrake side or do i have to adjust them inside the drums.

i would appreciate any help

thanks.

there is an adjustment nut under the lever. Pull it up, then pull back the lever gaiter and you'll see it

I was just pointing it out to him. And yes, its if he reset the self adjuster correctly...

But he shouldn't need to do that, if he's reset the self adjusters within the brakes then the cable should be the same length as before.

it can take some time for an automatic adjuster to find the correct position if it is reset back to the shortest setting. that is why you should give the brakes a damn good pumping before adjusting the cable. i often use the "100 pumps down a hill" method. you can tell it works by the reduction in pedal travel.

it is not unusual for different brand shoes to result in the cable seeming to be far too long and you need to adjust it a lot. i find brake world shoes require this on every car i'v ever fitted them to, but QH shoes do not.
