General shocks

General shocks

shocks dont lower the car. ride height is controlled by the springs, the shocks simply control the bounce of the springs.

if you fit 40mm lowering springs then the standard shocks are fine.

you only need shorter shocks if you fit lowering springs that drop it more than 70mm.

sorry should have mentioned it is lowered already on bilstein springs but when i had my new gearbox fitted a while ago it was sat for a week or so and since has developed the most annoying squeek in the world so need them replacing

cheers

doubt it's the shocks. more likely a rubber bush or something, thats been disturbed when changing the box. ;)

uprated shocks are definately a good idea when handling is concerned though, especially if the springs are uprated.

drop link is a favorite for knocking over a bump. the wishbone has 3 bushes so it is also a main cause of noise. both can be easily and cheaply repalced. you need to inspect them to determine where the nosie is. any play in the bush or signs of cracked/torn rubber mean it is worth replacing.

yeah a squeek is often a shock. try some silicone spray on the shock's rod, and make sure its dust cover isnt catching on anything.

DO NOT use an oil based lubricant on the shock's rod.

its pretty easy to tell if its front orf back by going over a bump. the front and rear go over at different times, so you can tell which is noisey.

yeah sorry i should have read your post more carefully.

the arm is bolted to the subframe. the rubber bush could only sqeak if there was play, meaning the problem is a worn bush even if the noise is the bush running on the subframe. the only other possibility would be a loose arm bolt allowing movement between the arm and subframe.

hey guys, had both wheels off and checked everythin all bolts are tight and bushes look in good nick as arms are only few months old, lubricated shocks with silicone lubricant but no luck. the squeek only happens when coasting or at a steady speed and it doesn't happen when accelerating or braking. not sure what it is running out of ideas now, poss engine mount ???

cheers

Spray WD40 on your rubber bushes. I bet it'll stop.

silicone spray is better imo. it makes the rubber swell so they stay quiet for longer (and you can even pass an MOT by reducing play).

I ran out of my PTFE spray so its WD40 for me until i get more. :)

The Alfa 156 2.4 JTD suffers from squeeks coming from the front and rear rubber bushes. Happens more when cold than warm. SPray the bushes and the noise stops. However its only a temporary measure as it does return so its best to replace them.

But as Jug mentioned PTFE works alot better, on most things including slow electric windows. :)

if you've already done the arms then the drop links are next on the list. thankfully they are very cheap and easy to do yourself.
