Hi,

Earlier this year I was ripped off by a garage who replaced my lovely smooth gearbox (broken diff) with a complete lemon.
I've since had that replaced with a reconditioned box from a gearbox specialist (not reconditioned themselves) but it's still not perfect. At least I have a 12mth warranty this time.

Fifth is pretty whiney and 2nd doesn't slip in that easy. Is this just the way of the world or should a reconditioned box be more or less perfect?

Could someone give me an idea of the typical price for a reconditioned box? (Bravo 1.2 16v)
Mine seemed expensive and I'll feel better about demanding perfection if I did pay over the odds.

I only want the car to last a couple more years so I don't have to buy an ugly Stilo ;-)

Thanks.

Tom

a reconditioned box is usually just a second hand box from a scrapyard with a higher price tag. seriously, that is what 75% of recon boxes are. the rest are damaged boxes that have had the damaged part replaced, that doesnt make them any better than a scrapyard box, just more expensive.

you have a warranty so use it, demand a fully working box.

i've bought several scrapyard gearboxes and never once had a problem, but that is only through good luck (and party from only buying boxes from low mileage completely standard crashed cars). all my scrapyard boxes cost £50-75 each and came with a 28day warranty so i really couldn't see the point of buying a recon box for twice the price.

imo you should have replaced the diff on your original box, there is no need to repalce the whole thing is everything except the diff is ok. replacing the diff is easy.

Thanks, that really does help me. The newest box certainly cost me more than what you have paid :)

I know I' was ripped off the first time, I just try not to think about it. I will make sure to get my moneys worth this time.
