:)Hi can anybody help a newby to the world of fiat .
problem is temp gauge keeps going into red whilst the fan doesn,t seem to want to work via the system [it does work if connected to a 12v supply though.] stat doesn,t work have taken that out getting one later. water pump is working ok ,and the head gasket is fine. relay for fan is ok also can anybody tell me where the water temp sensor is located as i,ve no handbook or workshop manual at present cheers

Be very careful running it that hot, It will cook the gaskett.

To be honest i'm not sure where the sender is for the fan on a 1.2

It could possibly be operated from the actual temp gauge which then sends a signal to the ecu. When the needle climbs it operates the fan. In which case its probably a dirty relay contact. I think the relay is mounted on the edge of the battery tray. There will also be a fuse.

Will let someone with more 1.2 knowledge try and answer more fully.

the fan should not work when connected to a 12v live. the fan is negativel yswitched, so no matter which side you touched a live on there would be no earth so the fan could not have worked unless you gave it an earth or unless you have a short to earth elsewhere in its circuit.

first test to do is see if the fan has a permanent live. if it doesnt then you have the easy job or following the live circuot back to the battery, it doesnt go far so any problme will be easy to find and fix.

if the fan does have a live, then the problem is that the ecu isnt able to earth the fan to switch it on, or the ecu isnt trying to earth the fan at all.

any fault with the temp sensor will result in the fan staying on all the time, so i doubt its that. (the sensor is fitted to the thermostat housing, if you've removed the thermostat i fail to see how you could miss it)

by far the most common cause of the fan fault is a dirty or rusty relay. the relay is on the front of the battery tray. check its connector carefully too.
