hi my fiat brava just stopped driving the other day:bang:. it goes into gear but does not drive, is this the clutch? i dont know alot bout cars, so pls help:idea: thanx

john

if it goes in to gear but there is no drive it could be the clutch or it could be the differential. if it happened gradually and you noticed the clutch slipping more and more then i'd say its defo clutch. if it happened al ofa sudden with no wanring, especially if you were driving it hard or abusing it in a carpark at the time, then i'd say differential.

diff failure can be common on the 1.2.

Hi guys, my clutch needs adjustment, I can barely get into gear even if I press on the pedal real hard. How do I adjust the cable? Should I "shorten" or "lengthen" the conduit to fix it?

My guess is... lengthen. I think... Or... I don't know. ;-P

your car has a hydraulic clutch, not a cable. usually your problem is a sign the slave cylinder (on top of gearbox) is leaking. its a common problem.

Nope - it is a cable and I am 100% certain as I had to replace the whole box some three years ago. Remember - it is a '97 SX for EE market.

So... clockwise (shorten) or vice versa?

Re: clutch problem

My Bravo 1.8 judders as you pull away in 1st, and the biting point feels real high, is this a sign of my clutch going? the juddering only happens in 1st...

any ideas on whats going on guys? :chin:

in that case you need to shortern the cable. that will mean you pull the clutch fork further, disengaging the clutch more.

biting point will always be high, it adjusts automatically, however a judder in 1st is usually due to clutch plate wear so imo a new clutch will be needed sooner rather than later.

oh great... more expense! haha so how much roughly should i be paying for this new clutch? as i notice that garages tend to rip me apart due to my lack of knowledge on mechanics... any rough prices would be of help...

cheers (y)

full clutch kit fitted is about 200 - 250 here in london

Not as bad as i expected... i have been charged 450 for the punto sporting i had before to have its clutch replaced, did they see me coming? haha :bang:

in that case you need to shortern the cable.

That's what I did yesterday. The cable is wound through the firewall, goes to the front, turns back behind the bumper and goes back to under the brake pump. That is where the nut and locking nut are located.

I've shortened the cable by some 10-15 turns of the nut and now the clutch disengages somewhere below halfway of the pedal's travel and engages pretty high, I'd say 2/3 from the floor.

Plus, the pedal is harder to press now, and the travel is uneven (less errr... refusal?? closer to the floor). Can it stay like this or should be corrected?

Also - I have found a torn 5mm thick rubber washer (as shown in the pic) resting on the box - does it belong to the cable? Can it be the cause why the cable got too loose? I'd say so but am not 100% sure.

If so, where exactly does it go? I'll get a new one, fit it and adjust the clutch again.

Hi tom, looks like it could belong to the cable assembly as for where it would go i dont think there would be many members here able to tell you as the only brava/o to come with a cable clutch was the 1.4 (i maybe wrong but i think even the 1.2 is hydraulic) and as all mareas are 1.6 or bigger then none of the uk ones would have the cable.

did they see me coming? haha :bang:
yes, you paid double.

that is fine (how it should be)

its hard to say, but i wouldnt be surprised if the rubber washer was used to stop the adjuster slipping.

The cable's probably the same. I'll ask on.

Thanks!

One more thing I can do myself with the car!

Either this or act as a vibration damper maybe?
I'll ask on Polish forum and check in e-Per.

Thanks for the advice!
