Hi all please can someone tell me where we are going wrong.. Long story but Fiat Bravo 1.4 driving on Sunday and stopped at junction when all of a sudden NO GEARS WHATSOEVER, had to get towed home. Clutch felt fine although a little pop sound could be heard half way. If i turn the engine off it goes into gear fine, if i try to turn the engine on whilst it is in gear it wont start. Anyway after reading on here we changed the slave cylinder, yes it was split, however this didnt fix the problem although you could now force into gear. We then changed the master cylinder and are now trying to bleed the system but for some un known bloody reason we cannot bleed it. The air is just continuosly coming out and im talking hours and days of bleeding but still not complete.

PLEASE PLEASE can someone tell me what the hell is going on.

you need to pressurise the brake fluid reservoir to force fluid in to the master cylinder. if you're careful and you have strong lungs you can do this with your mouth while an assistant pumps the pedal, and at the same time have a brake bleed kit on the slave cylinder bleed nipple. laugh all you want, the mouth method works, i've used it more than once.

Thats what he is doing although he does not have bleed kit but he isout there now in the rain with syringe, tube and bottle and with someone in drivers seat. All i can here is him shouting UP DOWN UP DOWN.

3 Nights he has been doing this why cant we do it?????????????????????

I want to cry...........

he needs to use a brake bleed kit (£4.99). you cant do it the old fashioned way with a fully dry system.

Right ok bought a bleeding kit, bled the system and we now have a clutch pedal. However, after all this the gears are still not working at all? What is wrong?

if pressing the clutch pedal does not allow the selection of any gears it means the clutch is not disengaging. that could be because the hydraulics are still not pushing the clutch fork far enough (visual inspection will help decide) or alternatively the hydraulics are fine and it is the clutch that has gone.

if you try to force it into gear when the clutch cylinder fails, you can damage the gearbox, most often the synchromesh on 1 gear. since you can not select any gears at all with engine running it suggest this is not the problem.
