Hi All,

I just got finished refitting everything after pulling my steering wheel to sort out my non-working horn. I had previoulsy replaced my stalk unit a few months ago, and as it was not a direct swap as the new one wasn't set up for a clock-spring unit, so the horn contacts didn't contact anything. At the time I didn't bother sorting it out. I'm up for inspection, so I decided to fix the horn today. Using the old contacts from my fried stalk unit, I got the horn to work. Foolishly I reconnected the battery to test the horn before refitting the airbag.

It wasn't until afterwards when all was put back in place when the airbag light stayed on that I did some online homework and found out that connecting the battery without the airbag connected will trigger an ECU fault. Is it smart enough to reset itself after a while? I live in Norway, and there are no Fiat dealers anywhere near, and if there were, they'd want at least 100 quid (after making me wait 3 weeks for an appointment) to look at it.

How can I reset it?

Joseph

if you can find a donor car that doesnt have the light on, you can swap airbag ecus to switch your light out, however you must disconnect battery and wait 20mins before starting work on either car to prevent switching the light on.

if you disconnected your battery and waited 20mins when working your your own car you wouldnt have turned the light on in the first place.

The way i have always done it, was to disconnect the battery, remove airbag fuse and wait 15mins. When i changed my steering wheel, the markings i had marked to align the wheel rubbed off, so I had to connect the battery and drive the car with the steering wheel just lightly put on with no airbag fitted and the airbag light on so that i could align the wheel while driving at slow speeds. Once i aligned the steering wheel I drove back home, disconnected the battery, waited 15mins then, refitted the nut for the wheel, refitted the airbag, refitted the fuse for the airbag and reconnected the battery. Switch engine on and no airbag light.

So basically if you remove the fuse you prevent the airbag ECU registering a fault. Everyone who offers advice on this subject never mention the fuse for the airbag. It makes all the difference.

Sorry i can't help but if you goto an auto electrician near you, they can turn the airbag light off for around £30. It doesn't need to be Fiat.
