i have a small problem with my cars idle,..
when i drive down the motorway or say 50/60 mph+
when i come to a stop the idle sticks at about 1500 rpm.it eventually lowers back down to 800 after a few miles off normal driving.
i have changed the idle control valve and cleaned my throttle housing out..any ideas guys?
its becoming a pain, its like having cruise control, when i dont want it.
1.8 hlx p reg.
cheers
alex

weird. you've done both things i would suggest, next is a thorough inspection to indentify any vacuum leaks on the intake, after that i would want to get it on a fiat examiner to see what the ecu thinks the throttle position sensor is saying when this high idle occurs.

well ive got a throttle position sensor and an air flow sensor,..i will change them both to see if it helps..
also when its doing this strange idle if i unplug the icv it cuts back down to 800,so maybe its somthing else telling the icv to open?
temp sensor i thought but its working fine.?

throttle position sensor tells it to open, so try that.

it sounds exactly like a sticking icv, so maybe you should try another scrapyard replacement.

:)well,i changed the throttle sensor, and the air flow sensor just because i had them spare..i also took the icv off and threw it into a paraffin bath for half a day..and nows its back to normal..
i took it down the motorway and took it to 80,pulled off at the slip road and it just dropped to 800 perfect..(y)

cheers for the respose jug.

HI guys.. just bought myself a fiat bravo and i seem to have the same problem. Idles at 1500 then it drops to 1000. Where can i find the ICV unit on the engine? Sorry its a bit stupid question but i am a complete novice when it comes to fiat engines.thanks for your help..

on a 1.8 it is more likely to be a vacuum leak, so check the intake and all vacuum/breather hoses carefully.

the idel speed control actuator is on the throttlebody, no.8 in the attached pic.

thanks for your help guys.. just one more thing.. i dont know if its related but my temp on the car stays very low unless i am in traffic.. is this common? usually sits around 1/4... thanks..

that is caused by the thermostat sticking open, another common problem. you can replace it yourself, it isnt difficult, and a new thermostat costs under £30 at your local motorfactor. it'll save you petrol, running cold causes overfueling.
