ok, have new front and back pads for my HGT. now how do you change them?

on my vectra it was simple.

do you need any specials tools.

has the front caliper gota come off?

and what do you do on the rears?

also in future.. got mot next week, and discs are pretty warn also. may replace them too. only question about hem, is how do you undo the center bolt, it has like a locking clip in the middle, and same question to remove the rears?

ta

Calipers have to come off on front and rear. 2 bolts on each one, and they're off...

Spring clip on the fronts, so a good pair of pliers is needed..

Front pistons can be pushed back to get the new pads in, but you'll need the specific wind back tool for the rears.

cool, did the fronts pretty easy cheers.

have the back pads. how does this tool work? can you do it with clamps or grips?

and gona get some drilled and grooved discs soon, how do you fit these?

ta

The wind back tool pushes and turns back the piston at the same time. Can be done without the tool, but defo not an easy thing to do. Halfords sell the tool for about £20 IIRC.

To change the discs, you'll need to remove the caliper and mounting plate first, then undo the 2 bolts on the disc face.

You may need a hammer as the old discs will be tight to get off due to rust etc. A few taps in various locations at the back of each disc should do the job.

Put new discs on, then the rest etc etc...

ok what is the mounting plate?

ive removed calipers and got them tied up out the way on the strut, and undone the two small 12mm pins that stick out the disc.. what plate? is it on the back?

and want to try and do rear pads without buying the tool. how would you do them wiuthout getting hold of the tool? using screwdrivers etc?

sorry, didnt make it clear, im replacing front and rear discs.

i have the new pads on the front, but still need to put new discs on the front.

thanks

Ryan to the rescuse! :D

for the fronts you have done it correctly, the disc just pulls off now (yeah right! lol)

you might like to fetch a pikey tool and give them a bash from behind.

for the rears, seriously just get the tool else you will be faffing about for hours getting really pissed off.

Ry

He is referring to the calliper carrier.
Ok, so far on the back brakes. You have removed 2x 13mm bolts which hold the caliper.
You have tied the caliper up out the way.
Now even with the 2x 12mm bolt/pins removed the disc will be obstructed by the calliper carrier.

2x 17mm bolts hold it in place. (y)

With it removed you might need to tap disc with a hammer/mallet.
use a block of wood to protect the disc, unless they are knackered.
If really stuck rotate disc round and keep tapping so that it comes off evenly.

ok what is the mounting plate?

The mounting plate is the thing that the caliper bolts onto to. As you've undone the 2 small bolts on the disc, you'll find the disc still won't come off due to the caliper mounting plate..

Behind the disc, on the hub, you will find 2 large bolts.. 17mm IIRC. Undo them, and the plate will come off, allowing the disc to be removed too.

nice, cheers again ry / guys

great help

thanks.. will be doing the 'operation' tonight..

may post pics of results.

and any opinions welcome on painting my calipers. its a yellow HGT, what colour do you think would look good? considering yellow or silver, maybe black?

what do you reckon would look best?

ta

black, or maybe yellow in this case, usually i wouldnt say that, but in this case it could work. if you have red detailing then that could work too.

ok, fronts are done and look awesome. My rears are still to do now. was waiting till i get this tool.

can someone who knows tell me which of these will rewind back the rear calipers on a HGT and the cheapest one as possible

preferrably £15 or less.

ok thanks. and reckon silver would look good, as the front pads are blu now. althought yellow and blue may look really cool too.
