Hi all
Just joined even though been reading on the site for the last year.
Need some help....
:bang:
My 1.4 1997 Bravo has been in and out of the garage in the last month. Basically had fuel injection light coming on and miss firing. They tried everything from HT cabels to most sensors without luck.
I drove the car for a week after it's last look over and something popped under the bonnet and the car would not start.
The garage is now saying it is the Crankshaft reluctor which has come away from the crankshaft . Does anyone know where to get a part and how much am I in for , and is it worth it?
Thanks ......Is my message in the right place???

you should post in the bravo/brava section.

i havent heard the wor 'reluctor' is a long time.

the crank sensor would stop the engie starting becasue there would be no spark, if oyu have no spark and you've checked the plugs, leads and coil pack then the crank sensor is the part to replace, however that wont help with the previous problem of fuel injection light and misfiring, that is a seperate problem, usually caused by poor compression on the 1.4 engine, do a compression test to see if the compression is even, if cylinder 1 is low is means the camshaft needs changing, which is very common on the 1.4 and caused by oil starvation.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
The car went in 3 weeks ago because there was missfiring and the fuel ijection light came on, it had a diagnostic check and the garage was saying they had elminated everything apart from the crankshaft and flywheel area but they'd need it in again. They believed that when there was some play under stress on the crankshaft (cornering) and it could be the seals failing causing movement on the crankshaft which was being picked up by the managment system... Last week it packed up altogether. They say that they dropped the oil sump for a quick look and that the reluctor had come away from the crankshaft. I am worried that if I pay to have the reluctor replaced there may still be a underlying problem. Elby

oh now i understand what you mean by 'reluctor'. they dropped the sump and saw that the crankshaft reluctor ring has come away from the crankshaft. this is usually called the 'phonic wheel' these days, reluctor ring is an outdated term.

that is very different to what i initially thought you meant. if the reluctor ring has come loose then you do get a misfire because the ignition timing is out. once the ring comes off the crank completely you cant start the engine because you have no ignition on the sprakplugs.

if they have removed the sump and seen that the reluctor ring is loose on the crankshaft then that is definately the problem. fixing it wont be cheap, but it should solve the problem (y)

Hi
Now I'm a little less worried as what they are saying seems to make sense to you and they're not pulling the wool over my eyes.
Very much appreciated in picking up this thread.(y)
Ive been told it will cost about £700 including part.
Considering the car has 70k, in good nick, new timming belt, new clutch, new exhaust and new tyres I'm wondering if it's worth it...maybe 'better the devil, you know'???

Looked at what you can get for 700-1000 and it may not be much better!
