the story so far.......

... the mrs was driving along in our bravo HGT and it suddenly just died. i went out to car with petrol(thinking it was that) but wouldnt start. it just turned over. not firing or anything. the AA came and thought it may be crank sensor so i got it towed to fiat. next day fiat put it on diagnostics machine and it came back with phase sensor not feasable. they told me they wanted 900quid to change it. they also said that the crank sensor sometimes throws up the same fault. being the cheaper of the 2 i changed the crank sensor, still nothing!

today me and a friend changed the phase sensor(pig of job as behind cam pulley). put in new water pump and belt to for good measure! we went to start but still nothing! we have noticed that the injector light is now not lit but it still aint firing. Pls someone help as this is getting expensive and very anoying. thanks for all your help so far.

marked all pulleys before removal of belt, they all line up the same on putting back together.

Listen for the pump. as bulldog says.

I would pop the bonnet lock the car, all doors. disconnect battery shut bonnet on 1st catch. leave car for an hour or so. return reconnect, shut bonnet and use your remote plipper if you have one to open car and then try to restart. (y) Did this on my coupe once (y)

hi this happened on my hgt once went over speed bump and just died as you say with no reason, did all basics but pump wasnt priming luckily i am good friends with my mechanic and have his mobile so rang him. He talked me through all basics and it ended up bein the fuel cut off switch under the passenger seat just pressed it and all was well not done it since. Mine is a 97 hgt and he said as they get older you get a bit of flex in the chassis and this can make the car cut the fuel so check this you may not have had to fix anythin !!!!hope this helps

thanks everyone, looked at the car again earlier and there was no spark or fuel!! the injector light was still off but i noticed the 'code' light stayed on. checked all fuses, one of the 15A fuses behind the glove box had blown(think the one for phase sensor etc!!) changed the fuse but still didnt start.but, the 'code' light has gone out and the injector light back on. we now have fuel at the rail but still no spark!?! any ideas??

If you have the radio code, I would seriously try disconnecting the battery ;)

i was about to suggest key code light but you've beaten me to it so next we need to do continutiy tests on the wiring from crank sensor to ecu. disconnect the crank sensor connector, hold it with the push clip at the top, and the following is true;
left pin goes to pin49 on ecu connector
centre pin goes to pin48 on ecu connector
right pin goes to earth

check that the 2 wires going to the cu connector have continuity to the appropriate ecu connector pins. also check the earth pin is earthed.

if this test does not identify a fault you need to get an oscilloscope to determine if the ecu is sending a reference voltage to the crank sensor and if the crank sensor is returning a signla that shows it is reading the wheel. if this test is also successful you need to consider an ecu fault, although there could also be a wiring fault on the LT output wiring from the ecu. report back your finding to the first test and we'll take it from there.

hi jug, there are only 2 pins in the crank sensor connector!?! did i mention injectors arnt pulsing

i think you may have the wrong connector, examine the attached sheet from the fiat workshop manual.

i just checked the mk2 manual, and that only has 2 wires.
another example of why you should always post the year and model in your original post.

on the mk2 connector the left pin goes to M10 and the right pin goes to M59.

yer sorry should have said! 99 vplate! will check for continuity and get back to ya. cheers again

ARRR given up, sent it off to a auto electrician for him to look at. will keep you all posted!
