re: Bravo '98 1.6 16v

I usually have a bit of trouble starting the car. After waiting a few seconds it usually starts the second time but occasionally needs a third go. I'm thinking maybe there is a problem with the spark plugs or starter motor?

The starter is probably the original and i'm not sure if the sparkies have ever been changed either. How often should they be changed?

Someone has told me that Bosch plugs are good ones. But is it easy to fit new plugs? Apart from a torque wrench and a feeler gauge do i need anything else- or is it a simple swap over?

Also i was thinking of booking it in at a garage for a normal service. For stuff like:

  • engine oil change
  • renew oil filter
  • brake pad/disc check
  • radiator coolant renewal
  • new spark plugs

and maybe a few other bits n pieces. But i checked before and they charge around £120 for the standard service. is this about right or too expensive?

The cars only done about 75k so far. Are there any parts in particular i should service first? Cam belt has been done in the past.

thanks for any advice given

plugs really arent that hard to change, and to be honest if ur the slightest mechanically minded the rest of that service isnt very hard either.. as for a price i got no idea cos i usually do small services like that myself or get my mechanic friend to help me out... i jus take him out for a pint after :D

if the car at 75k and u not sure wats it had done in the past i suggest u get the timing belt changed, i think its recommended to be changed every 5 years or about 60k miles so its probably due one soon.

good luck dude

plug gaps are pre-set so you dont need a feeler gauge these days.
only use NGK plugs on your engine. plugs should be chaged every 20k. you should also replace the HT leads.

your starting problem could be weak ignition, but if the plugs and leads dont fix it then i would sugest you clean the throttle body.

£120 for a standard service isnt unusual, but you could do it yourself for much less money, and to be honest it is all very easy stuff to do, especially if you have a haynes manual.
