Hi
I hope no one asked the same question, I could not find it.
I bought a Fiat Brava reg 51 1.6 and I have red key to open doors and a blue Key for the ignition, they won't work otherwise.
Also have a pair of spares (1 blue and 1 red) with a small paper tag with a letter and 4 numbers included. I have never used them.

I noticed the spare Red and blue key are similar to the Blue I used to turn on the car, but the Red key used to open the doors is totally different.
Could it be the previous Owner changed the door locks? if so How can I make one key work for all.
Otherwise I'll be loocking to install remote central locking.

Thanks for your advice

The red key is only needed if you need to reset the computer. It should fit all the doors and the ignition.

DON'T keep it with the car.

Sounds like the ignition, door locks and computer are from different vehicles. I'd be very suspicious, I'm afraid.

The car is HPi clear, by the way RAC is doing it for £5.

I think I have a red key only for Door locks.

Does any one knows how to test a Red key is working? in other owrds, How can I be sure the spare set Ihave belongs to the blue Key I am using.

Thanks

since you have 3 original keys that fit the ignition switch adn only 1 key for the door it suggests someone has replaced the door lock barrel (maybe both doors, have you checked?) probably after a break in attempt. you can grind the tumblers down on the door lock barrel so it works with the 3 original keys, then you wont need that red key for the door and everything will be back to normal.

to grind the tumblers down, you firstly need to remove the lock barrel from the door (not too difficult, use haynes if in doubt) then insert one of the keys that do not work in the lock, then use a dremel or similar to grind down all the tumblers that are protruding from the barrel. you need to grind them all down flush with the barrel, then it will work with your original 3 keys and you can refit the lock barrel to the door.

what is a tumbler? down each side of the lock barrel there will be these 'things' sticking out. grind them all down as much as possible with the key that doesnt work inserted in the barrel. a picture paints a thousand words-

to test the red key that fits the ignition barrel use it to switch the ignition on, you will see the code light go out. now switch the ignition off and back on again, this time the code light should remain lit. if that happens then you know the red key is the correct red key for your car and it is working corrrectly. keep it safe, only use the blue keys for driving. once you grind your barrel then your blue key will work everything and you can throw away the red key for the door (to prevent confusion with your real red key).
