My 2001 Brava 100 SX 16v is running on 3 cylinders. I've replaced the spark plugs which temporarily fixed the prob, but after 5 miles, power was lost and it was back to 3 cylinders.
The EOBD light is on continuously.
From reading other probs on this site it seems the injector is the cause.
I've narrowed it down by taking out the HT leads and it seems cylinder 3 is the problem.
I've tested all the HT leads and they are fine.
Looking at 1 of JUG's guides on testing the injectors, i tried to have a go but all the torx bolts are so badly corroded in the engine they are starting to round off.
I'll have to admit defeat and get a garage to do the work, but before i do i was just wondering if anyone else had encountered this prob and if there were any other things i could try?
By the way all the fuses are ok, so thats not the cause.
Many thanks for any help recieved.

you dont need to unbolt anything to measure the resistance of your injectors. if you look at the left hand side of the fuel rail (when looking in engine bay) you will see the injector wiring harness connector. disconnect it, then inside you will see 5 pins. the centre pin si the shared earth, the other 4 pins are each for an injector. use a multimeter to measure the resistance of each injector, touch the blakc terminal on the centre pin then touch the red terminal on each other pin in turn, making a note of the resistance each time, if any are less than 13ohms then they definately need changing.

the rounded off bolts are not uncommon, the problem is that the bolt is a ribe head bolt, and ribe bits are not common so most people (including me) will use torx bits instead, while they work in most cases on very tight bolts you will round them off. the solution is to grind/file 2 flat sides on the head anmd grip it with something, or grind the head off compeltely then you can remove whatever is stuck and then reomve the remaining bolt. obviously you'll then need new bolts when refitting.

jug - you surely have a set of ribe bits :)

if anyone cant get them off the shelf, go to a sealey or draper tool distributor, they should be able to order you some - if they dont know what they are, ask for a catalogue, or you can order direct. and buy 2 sets, smaller bits will get broken..

Owen.

If the other advice doesn't work...

I had this problem 2 weeks ago. i took it for the MOT and told them the problem. They ran a diagnostic on it and came back with nothing. When I went to pick it up they had fixed the problem. They changed the lead connected to the cylinder concerned. Not sure on the technical terms but it was one of the 4 leads that goes about 30cm into the engine to the spark plugs.

Hope that helps.

HT leads, they should all be changed regularly, at least on every second sparkplug change (assuming you change your plugs at the recommended interval)

if you also have a 1.6 model then it is usually injector failure, very common, but also cheap and easy to fix. very few garages are able to diagnose it, partly because a diagnostic wont show up this fault, but mostly because the average mechanic is a bloody idiot and they dont even check the basics, even at fiat dealerships.

there is plenty of info to help you if you search for previous threads containing the words 'injector' 'multimeter' 'resistance'. you can do a simple test with a multimeter to determine if you have injector failure. if you live in the north east of england i'm happy to do it for you at no cost.

Thank you so much Jug. I would love to have you repair it if only I lived nearby but I am from MALTA! Wish me luck!:)
