HI,

My starter motor has died!!!

I have seen one on eBay, but not sure its compatible? Its from an N reg Bravo 1.8 HLX, mines a 1.8 115 ELX.

Any gen appreciated.

Ta folks:)

yes it will fit, but please make sure its definately your starter motor thats the problem and not simply a bad earth strap from gearbox to chassis, a flat battery, a rusty connection on the starter motor, dirty battery terminals etc.

Maybe you can offer a bit of advice.......

I had a look at some of your replies on similar threads, and i must admit Im not convinced it is the starter motor, but......

Its been playing up for a couple of months, it started with just not starting first time. After cranking for a couple of seconds, it would start second time.

Was like that up till SUnday, we went shopping in it on Sunday afternoon. Monday morning, dead. Wont start at all, and it seems like a flat battery to me.

Ima bit stumped, But I will check the above and let you know. Thanks for your help so far.:worship:

Right!

We tested the power off the alternator with a multimeter, 14v, does that sound about right?

We are going to charge the battery overnight and see how long it lasts. Im guessing that maybe the starter motor is drawing too much juice of the battery to start, and draining it.

Will also get th earth strap checked whilst we are at it.

Been quoted £35 from a breaker for a new motor, the one on eBay is a tenner less.

Fingers crossed!!:D

it cant be the starter motor if the starter motor was turning the engine.

yes, it should be 14v with engine running and all electrics switched on (lights, radio, demister, etc) and 14.4v with engine running and all electrics switched off.

Jug,

Looks like you were absolutely bang on mate:cool:

My brother popped down this afternoon, took the battery off to put it on charge and he was a bit shocked.

Battery was a Varta 14v 250ah battery, and he said he though this was a bit weak for a 1.8 engine!!

He put on a spare battery he had, a 480ah (I think), and guess what, started first time, and its about -1 outside!

Battery was on the car when we bought it, three years ago now, so maybe its just the battery dying. Im afraid I dont know enough about car electrics to know if the battery was good enough, but its been ok for three years!

Anyway, just wanted to say a big TA! for helping us save a few quid and a lot of effort!

Cheers:worship::worship::worship::worship:

the 1.8 should have at least 470cca (cold cranking amps- needed to start the engine, especially in cold weather).

540cca or 600cca is recommended. i had a 600cca on my 1.8. i think it cost me £35 at my local motorfactor for a 5 year battery.
