Hi Folks Bought a month ago started off by cutting out. Inj. warning light comes on & engine stops (usually only minutes between faults), changed fuel filter, and looked at fuel tank sender etc. still same. Found this forum searched posts and then came across ECU's:bang: had a local garage do diagnostic tests, for free:) 1st to clear faults 2nd came up with EGR valve + rail pressure monitor malfunc. but couldn't help further and suggested Fiat Inverness who traced fault to pressure reg on pump. (connectors loose!) £116 for 2hrs & said they fixed it, not so, journey home same fault but def. not so freq. (come back they said!) The fault now happens after a few seconds so not drivable I had booked to go back to Fiat, its 2hrs away, any one got any pointers, not very mechanical, but is it worth stripping down pressure reg. valve, I have a diagram. Or can any of this electronics be safely disconnected and allow me to drive

is the in tank fuel pump running the whole time ?. Does the engine die suddenly when the light comes on or does it slowly die ?. And how does it restart ? - straight away or does it take a bit of cranking ?. You may have to get another diagnostic done to see whats happening here - watch the fuel rail pressure live data when its starting and running..

Dont attempt to strip any of the pump/regulator down.

or take it back to Fiat and tell them to fix it properly this time - kick up a fuss..

i'd replace the entire fuel pump with one from a scrapyard car, wont cost much. if that fails to fix it its time to get testing the wiring on all the pump's circuits, using a haynes for the wiring diagrams.

i wouldnt consider the pressure regulator to be a possibiltiy, its a basic mechanical part so its very unlikely that it could cause such an intermittent fault, especially when you consider the fiat dealer manage to make a noticable difference simply by cleaning up a connector.

is the in tank fuel pump running the whole time ?. It may do I'll check that one.

Does the engine die suddenly when the light comes on or does it slowly die ?. And how does it restart ? - straight away or does it take a bit of cranking ?. Suddenly dies, light comes on, cruise along, then ign. lights come on. I switch off power for about 5secs. till relay clicks, it will restart immediately That was what used to happen now it dies within 5 - 10 secs. with same restart.

You may have to get another diagnostic done to see whats happening here - watch the fuel rail pressure live data when its starting and running.. OK weighing up options on how to get it there

Dont attempt to strip any of the pump/regulator down. OK

or take it back to Fiat and tell them to fix it properly this time - kick up a fuss.. Yes that will happen:)

checked tank pump and it runs whilst engine - both stop at same time

There's another relay beside the fuel pump relay which switches another power supply to the ECU - this relay may be faulty and causing the supply to drop out. You'd be best to make sure that the ECU is not loosing power while running first - get a multimeter on the supplies and watch them while engine is running. a dropping supply or earth may not show up on diagnostics. If it was a fuel problem the engine would most likely splutter a bit then cut off..
